Surely Gordon Brown must call an election in May? Otherwise he doesn't have a mandate from the electorate to be PM, regardless of what happened in the last election. He needs a vote of confidence to govern with authority.

Careful of opinion polls: they led Labour to be over optimistic in 1992, and too pesimistic in 1997. They also suggested that 2005 would return a much smaller majority than it did eventually return. I'm still confident of a Labour victory in 2009/10. But I can say for the first time in 14 years, the Conservatives will have a fighting chance.
