I just got my road bike earlier this week. Coming from track bikes, I have little to no experience on dealing with derailleurs or anything of that sort.

I find it quite common for the chain to get crossed up when I pedal backwards...(or roll it backwards) it's appears to be mostly from being on the extreme creating cross chaining (big/large) So, I never do it... rubbing, do an alignment
as you've probably already learned from the Park Tool site, it's most likely a very siimple adjustment. Cause might have been a little stretch in the cable, which is normal. a half-turn or so on the barrel adjuster should set things right.

On new bikes (or after replacing cables) the cable "stretches" a bit. So you will have to adjust the adjuster, almost always turning it out a few clicks.

If the chain is jumping around on the rear derailleur, you may need to replace the chain. I've experienced this problem, and each time, a new chain solved the problem.
