Thread: New problem with new member registration

Started 2 months ago by Richard T. Eger
Dear All, I have just become aware that my site is not always sending out the confirming e-mail to prospective new members. This is a new one for me and I need to obviously fix it. Here is the background. About a week ago I had a prospective new member try to register. I'd get the notice of this from the site, but the fellow would fail to follow through, so I sent him an e-mail ...

Richard I would update to the latest version which is 3.8.4 PL1. Many times this will solve the problem.

Dear Peggy, Thanks for the advice. I will ask my son to do this. I didn't want to bother him unless it was truly worthwhile. I ran another test again re-registering my friend. Again, he got the confirming e-mail. We replied and he reached the moderation step. However, I didn't receive the notice that he had applied, which is what happened with the latest applicant upon re-...

Dear Peggy, My son upgraded my website to the vB 3.8.4 Patch Level 1 yesterday. I am still not getting e-mailed notices of prospective new members. Is there some routine maintenance that I should be doing but am not that might be causing the problem? I ignore the various notices in the Admin Control Panel. Would this be the problem? Is there some setting that may need resetting?...

For starters, I would switch your web hosting. No way they should be incommunicado. You can find a list of suggested web hosts here That said. No, no maintenence. It might be because of a variety of factors beyond your control. But the host your using might have an IP block with some email companies due to spam or something. So first thing is to change hosts and see if that clears it up.

Dear Joeychgo and Peggy, Interesting comment about the ISP block. However, I use a local ISP, Delmarva Online, here on the Delaware-Maryland-Virginia eastern shore pennisula. It is a dial-up service located in Salisbury, MD, with local connections in Delaware, where I live. One reason I maintain it is that I have a good rapport with their tech service people. I can ask them if they've ...

Dear Joeychgo and Peggy, I followed up with my ISP and you were correct, Joeychgo. The mail server that the website uses was listed on RATS-Spam as a spamming server. As such, my ISP was blocking the server. They will attempt to punch hole in the wall and I will check to see if I can again receive site e-mail notifications. However, I am going to assume that the "spamming server" ...

I wouldnt even wait - I would just switch

Dear Joeychgo and Peggy, Perhaps good advice, but I do like to give the other guy a chance to respond before hauling down the flag. An e-mail has been sent from 2Checkout.com, which handles 24hostingnow.com's billing, clearly indicating a fix it or lose it situation. Should this not elicit action near term, I agree with your advice to move on. I also just had a conversation with my ...

Dear Joeychgo, Yes, I saw that link earlier in the thread and have visited it before. At the bottom, the list says that it is copywritten 2006, suggesting that it is 3 years old and possibly out of date. Three years ago, 24hostingnow.com was a functioning company with responsive tech support. The top 2 server companies seem to be preferred. The first may or may not depend on the ...

Dear Peggy and Joeychgo, My thanks to each of you for your assistance. Peggy, I fully agree with you about checking out any business' reputation and appreciate the address of the forum where I can do this for a move of my site. Now, not trying to step on any toes, but I'm wondering why you didn't go with one of the top two Joeychgo had check rated. Again, a PM would be fine to avoid any disturbance, if you see fit. Regards, Richard
Peggy

I thought so. I usually am, you know. How's your new deal working out? I'm still with KH and probably will be forever.

No, its not out of date. I wrote the page and simply never changed the copyright date on the html templates.
