Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Ti Rich
Hi Guys The i know the wife only does short trips all the time but the new car is only averaging 28mpg - is this about right as i expected a bit more than that! What do other people get who do lots of short trips (3 miles or less)

Jeez! My 135 does 26mpg - normal urban driving. How is she driving it, if shes anything like my other half she tends to drive our diesel like a petrol car ~ i.e: plenty of revs!!....

She drives it OK and i drive it half the time too. I expected about 35 but this does appear low to me.

Sounds rather low. I'm getting around 44-45mpg in a 118d with mixed driving, maybe 40% motorway and the rest urban and country lanes.

Fuel consumption is worse when the engine is cold, and this is especially true of diesel cars, even more so than petrol. Three mile journeys either mean the engine never warms up or you're stuck in traffic achieving rubbish mpg. You need to figure out if there's something wrong with your car... so get it warmed through, then take it on the motorway and hold 70mph. I'd expect you to see a good ...

Diesel engines are not suited to short trips and your cars engine is simply not getting a chance to warm up and run efficiently.

I would not be happy either. I've a 123D M-Sport with only 4400 miles on it. My car does a 7 mile journey each morning to work & 7 miles back (in stop/start commuter traffic). At weekends it's only used for a similar shopping run but I have averaged 48.6 mpg..... And I don't hang about. Something is wrong as your car is supposed to be far more economical than mine! My experience makes "...

If you are only driving 6 miles a day then I wouldn't worry too much about fuel consumption, you are still only going to use a gallon of fuel for your weekly commute Your indicated mpg is never going to be good on a short commute - especially if you are in traffic. My wifes getting 20mpg out of our 130 on her commute (about three miles), I was slightly dissapointed with this but took it on a...

My 120 d auto ED has seen 21mpg around outer london postcodes ie that was a 9 miles trip 1030 am w4,w3,nw10,and back. On a test on M4 one night coming home 80mph for 10 miles= 47mpg, 70mph for 10 miles= 56mpg, 55-60mph for 15 miles an amazing 72mpg. IMHO if your someone who does mostly short journeys and likes petrol cars buy a petrol.

Quote: I totally disagree with him - modern diesels warm up far more quickly than petrol engines - especially alloy blocked diesels like the 123D Sorry I don't agree with this a modern diesel is far more efficent and therefor produces less waste heat than even the best modern petrol. In other words they take longer to warm up. Frequent extreme short journeys are not good for diesel engines...

Well last night i managed to take the car on a 50 mile round trip. Four up and with lights aircon and wippers on it did 54MPG so i guess it is OK and it's these short trips really killing the MPG. Have to say owning a 330d as well i am very impressed with the smoothness and refinement of the 118d so far!

This economy driving thing makes you wonder.Anyone remember this ,about 20 years ago? Stirling Moss drove from london to scotland twice. The first time he drove like a lunatic, speed wise in and out etc etc.Next drive, well I cant remember how it was desribed ,or what the parameters were, lets just say he drove "sensibly" .The difference in the 2 drives time wise was amazingly close.I wont lie I cant remember what it was 20...
