Hi everyone -
Looking for some input / words of wisdom. I was dx'd with RRMS officially in April 2005, although I believe I've had MS for at least 10 years prior to that. Due to my symptoms, I am no longer working which means I am home more than before. It has taken awhile - but over time I have established a "new normal".
Some background before my question. As everyone does, we...
Karen,
We are like you - we don't socialize with our neighbors although, I know a few just because our kids have grown up together.
There have been a couple of rumors around the neighborhood about us and I am sure there is probably more than I am aware of.
We tend to ignore what "appears" to be floating around about us and figure if they are talking about us they are leaving ...

That is the part of your head that is correct.
People tend to think the worst. Perhaps it boost's them up somehow?

Hi Karen, if I were you I would just ignore them. Nosy busy bodies that have nothing better to do than pick apart their neighbors lives don't deserve a second thought!!
Those of us with MS have so many more important ways to spend out time, such as ---- trying to walk, trying to find the strength to do out daily work, just trying to keep our mind clear to focus on what is really important on...
one thing i always tell myself if i start to worry about what people think:
do i respect them? if not i don't worry.
i only care about what someone thinks when it is someone i respect!
Karen,
PLEASE do not waste what precious energy you do have on those people who happen to live near you.
They are not your friends, or they would not gossip.
They are ignorant and not in your best interest.
Distance yourself from them and let them say what they want. I checked your profile and see that you are young and suspect your neighbors are young also.
I think older neighbors ...
To look at it from another angle though, as you are off work and am assuming you have a disabled badge (sorry if wrong). Not being sure what the US system for support money for disabled etc, but maybe receiving a benefit (again correct me if wrong). MS as you know is an invisable disease and people who dont know you have wouldnt have a clue most of the time.
Maybe they think you are ...
In the USA it is very difficult to be FINALLY determined to be disabled by the US Govt and receive the monies due to us, that WE have paid in.
We do NOT have free medical as some countries do.
It is insulting to call ANYONE 'Spongers'.
If an MD diagnoses a patient as disabled, then they are disabled and it is not your job or ability or my job or abililty to second guess them and call them a...
Thanks to everyone who has responded - I wish all of you were my neighbors.
Johooper - I agree with you. I do think (especially from my own personal experiences) that people "assume" I am scamming / sponging off the system - it just cannot be possible for someone who looks "young" to have a handicap parking sticker...(note sarcasm.. ) I once had an elderly man yell and swear at me from...
There is no law that people must be at work at the office or the factory everyday until they are 65 or 66 and eligible for full Social Security!
Many people retire early, work from home, are full-time homemakers, are independently wealthy (we wish!) or have other reasons they are not going off to the office every day. That is no one else's business if it is due to disability or to your ...
