The damn noise has me worried. I am going to buy pentosin fluid now to see if that helps.

No fluid, no nothin. Fill it up with .45 liters of Pentosin CHF 11S fluid and then see what happens. You might also want to have a look around and see where the fluid went, doesn't just evaporate. Be careful around the pump unit, reservoir and lines, that stuff is at high pressure and if there is a leak, ever so tiny, could drill a hole in your hand. ...oh, and don't panic.

Sounds just like his problem. So I guess that means there is no damage to the transmission. It just shifts into neutral to protect itself from potential problems.

When it works ok, does the sound go away when the clutch is activated then come back when the car is in gear?

the accident (or more likely the repair) could have caused a leak in the extremely high pressure hydraulics which caused the pump to run dry which caused the pump to not properly disengage the clutch which is probably resulting in the sound you hear (hard to tell) which is probably either the pump trying but not fully disengaging the clutch (bad pump internals or the clutch plate and flywheel grinding or half-engaging)...lots of...
