Thread: Need help choosing a soundcard

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by Soare
A week ago I got sick of my Altec Lansing FX5051 5.1 system and I decided to switch to a pair of Solo 7c stereo speakers to improve sound quality in music auditions...All well, the sound is incomparable but I started noticing the crackling and popping sounds much more than with the previous speakers (I know it's from the SupremeFX X-Fi sound card that came with my ...

I don't want a Creative card...I was thinking of Xonar ST or STX but I am still waiting for someone who can give me a clear picture and advice regarding my future configuration and needs....so don't be shy guys

I think any card from ASUS or Creative are good, especially lets say anything higher then £50.

It seems the HDAV deluxe is not sold in my region so I was thinking of going with the Essence ST but will I be able to use four speakers with it? Because I see it has RCA left/right and a 3,5mm jack and I was thinking of using the front speakers on RCA and the back ones with the 3,5 jack...Can that work?

No, because the Asus control panel will not allow you to. You can choose between "2 speakers" and "Headphones" but you can't have both output at the same time. The only way I know to get multi channel sound from the ST is if you have a AV receiver that's DDL friendly, ST can output multichannel sound that's DDL encoded. If you want 4 speakers on a analog connection, ...

Given he's using analog, and the cost of the ST + H6, the D2/D2X and DX might be a better route for him to go. Depends on how much he's willing to spend really...

If I were to search for someone who owns the HDAV + H6 board and purchase the H6 from him, will it work for me? Or the ST H6 expansion board will be somewhat different?

Soare replied 1 month, 3 weeks ago
In the end given the uncertainty of future availability for these high end cards around here and my needs for the moment I think I'm gonna go for the D2X and all will be fine...Correct me if I'm wrong to go for this one!

I'm from Romania not the US...and things tend to get here a little slowly if they get here at all.

gamerk2 replied 1 month, 3 weeks ago
The D2/D2X is still one of the best cards around.

GenClaymore replied 1 month, 3 weeks ago
You might beable to find a Xonar DS it does have replaceable op-amp slots which the D2/X doesnt have. So you can slap in some LME49720s and so forth.

GhostXL, I have an Auzen X-Fi HTHD and a Essence ST. The X-Fi games better. Runs smoother, plus, there are compatibility issues with Asus's GX and some games. For gaming, X-Fi is still better.

Agreed. The few games with GX issues happen to be the same games with Alchemy issues. And with Quads/Duos, and FPS hit due to extra work by software is generally less then 2FPS (at most).

Yea Gamer the only game that i saw that had the issues was the same games that doesnt work with alchemy. Koei Dynasty warrior type games are the ones that hate both GX and Alchemy.
