Thread: Need dough: pizza delivery?

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by TheNewD
Hey Fools. I'm waiting to get a job. It's supposed to be there for me, (paperwork is churning through the HR machine) but it's only part-time until mid-December. I need some extra money, and I've come up with a few ideas. #1 is pizza delivery driver. Anybody done this? How is it? I'd try to go to one of the more expensive pizza joints around here, with the hope of getting larger tips ...

That depends entirely on the area and what you can get. Around here, working fast-food delivery is good money. In a lot of places, you can't even get that job.

What about cashier at a grocery store? You'll be making close to min wage, but it's still money. Granted, I don't know if even they are hiring right now. If you work evenings your pay is greater, at least when I worked evenings. WRJ

I need some extra money, and I've come up with a few ideas. Try to sell something? There are many types of in-home businesses. I'll give you the example I know best: Mary Kay. I've come up with a few ideas. #1 is pizza delivery driver... Balance your need for the extra money against some negatives. There's a lot to be said against delivering pizzas. First, there's real danger of being robbed. This is especially true if your delivery car is logo'd with one of those small signs some companies require you to attach to your roof and you're seen pulling up ...

...#1 is pizza delivery driver.... You will need to check with yur car insurance company to see how this is handled so you are covered. Greg

If you use your car for 'business', your car insurance rates might go up significantly....especially if you drive at night. For paper delivery, I suspect you put at least $10/day in wear and tear on your car....and you run the risk of accidents if it rains/snows/sleets or there is ice....and you go through gas, naturally..... If you are in good suburb, pizza delivery can work...most of...

How about house cleaning? Easy to do, low start-up costs, and with the holidays some people may be looking for house cleaners as their schedules get busy just around the time many people have house guests.

I second the house-cleaning suggestion, if your body can take it. Good house cleaners are hard to find and coveted when they are. Do it by the hour for a reasonable rate, be detailed and conscientious, and referrals will probably explode. I've known people who make quite good money doing this ... and ... you have some flexibility with your hours. Caat

#1 is pizza delivery driver. Anybody done this? How is it? I'd try to go to one of the more expensive pizza joints around here, with the hope of getting larger tips than at a big chain. There are issues with pizza delivery. The main one is that you will probably need to provide your own car insurance. Your insurance cost will increase significantly. Many unwisely don't notify ...

I think housecleaning would be the best. Good suggestion, thanks. No startup costs and flexible hours. So, Craigslist or referrals from friends, I guess? Regarding Mary Kay, my sister did that last year, and ended up giving up. In the end she started basically giving them away (at cost). So I'm hesitant to do that. Thanks, everybody. TND

I couldn't make myself work retail. It sickens me that retail outlets don't pay their workers a living wage. I had a bad experience in college. My department store manager kept scheduling me for 7 hour and 45 minute shifts so that she wouldn't have to give me a half-hour lunch break. I should have told her off, but I was shy back then. I'm righteously confrontational now. :-) TND

With this being the Christmas season, how about checking with retail outlets for part-time work?

Hi TND. Yes, I think post on Craig's List (it's always where I start looking) and just start telling people you know that you're doing it, and if they know anybody to refer you. Get some cards at www.vistaprint.com . They're about $5.00 shipping for the free cards, and you can put them up at local community boards. For my business (not housecleaning) I made a flyer and then left space at the bottom where I fold it up and...
