Thread: Need a recommendation on someone to thread a long barrel in LA
Started 1 month, 1 week ago by hill billy
Hopefully this is an ok spot to ask this question.
I am looking to get my Tikka barrel threaded for a Badger FTE brake and need someone reliable in the Northern LA county area.
I'd like to see if someone out there wants to tackle it for a trade, maybe ammo as I seem to have a lot more of that than cash these days but I will cheerfully pay if needed. Anybody have any leads they can point me ...
I don't know about anyone private, but Jim Hoag is reasonable and is in the north end of the valley.

It couldn't hurt to give him a call and see what he'd charge.
I contacted R&D Precision about 7 or 8 months ago for muzzle brake installation on my bolt guns and he never called me back. When I finally talked to him, he blew me off saying he's too busy with complete rifle builds.
I had to send it to RSE Custom guns and Scott screwed it up. Now I have a threaded/skip-threaded muzzle that won't keep the brake on.
have you consider Bain & Davis in ...
I called Bolsa Gunsmithing to get a quote to thread on an M1 Garand barrel. They said $180...
I think for that price, I could buy all the stuff to do it myself...
/\/\/\ Just as a follow up, I haven't seen Hoag's work personally on rifles, though I know he works on them. Everything I've seen him do on handguns in the past couple of years was pretty nice, IMO.
Jim Hoag is $180 as well and I have been quoted $100 in the past. If I can't get it done cheaper than that I may have to find another way. Any Reason it can't be done by hand if the brake doesn't have to be timed? Yes, I am that cheap.

I wouldn't attempt that. If the hand-...
Hill billy -- no problem being cheap, but barrel may require turning to the proper diameter in order to use the die. Is there a die made in the same size as the brake thread? $180 only represents about three hours labor -- disassemble rifle, Chuck up barrel/receiver in lathe, set up and single point threads, fit brake, remove and reassemble -- $180 does not seem an outrageous price. my ha-penny

Tell the smith to single-point thread it on a lathe. He's gonna turn the barrel down to a smaller diameter anyway. single-point cutting the threads from there isn't that much work. Using a die is not a precision way of doing it.

Have you tried Randal/AR15Barrels? http://www.ar15barrels.com/services.shtml He's in the Culver City area, and did quick and quality work on my last barrel shortening, crowning, and threading job. Chris
