Thread: Need a good hack and slash dungeon crawler

Started 3 months ago by Very_Snappy
Well, actually "good" isn't really necessary, just addictive and brainless. I have very little time nowadays for games and I find that I'm not all that interested in getting involved in something with a convoluted story (not that I ever really was) or a bunch of unnecessary gameplay mechanics. When I do have time it's only in short bursts, so I just want to sit down, kill a few things, gather ...

Deep Labyrinth for DS. I had lots of fun with it, and it even has two campaigns!

I've heard good things about the Wii Chocobo's Dungeon and Alien Storm. Maybe Izuna or Shiren (Both DS) might also be up your alley. Izuna and Shiren are roguelikes of the Mysterious Dungeon variety, so they're simple and easy to pick up and put down. Also, Romancing SaGa 3 is a really good pick up and play.

Oh! And there's also Alien Syndrome for the Wii! I haven't played any of the Diablo games, but I've heard that Alien Syndrome is a lot like it!

Addictive and brainless? All I'm turning up is Zombie Shooter 2, if that's your cup of tea? If you want addictive and AWESOME, go for Mount and Blade of course. Neither game is similar to what you specified though. Zombie Shooter 2 is a move with WASD aim with mouse top down KILL THEM ALL affair, Mount and Blade has you taking on some great on foot and especially on horse combat while ...

Deep Labyrinth doesn't look like what I'm looking for. Izuna and Shiren are good suggestions but I've played them both. Loved Shiren, wasn't as big on Izuna. Sorry, I should have specified that I am looking for a classic type of RPG. Sword and Sorcery stuff. Mount and Blade...yeah I couldn't really get into it. I could give it another try I suppose.

I can't remember if they were sword and sorcery but the PS2 Shining Force Neo and Tear are hack and slash. They're like insane amounts of enemies in one go affair and were fun in short bursts.

Very_Snappy replied 3 months ago
I've played Neo. That's the kind of thing I'm looking for though. Talk about brainless! Haven't played Tears but I hear it's not so great. Oh there is that other one, Shining Force EXA. Maybe I should look into that. Sorry to be so picky but where else am I going to get good RPG suggestions?

Darkstalker replied 3 months ago
Oh there is that other one, Shining Force EXA. Maybe I should look into that. Damn, that's the one I meant. Not Tear, which I haven't played. Never tried Tear. EXA is like Neo though so if you liked Neo you'll like EXA.

King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. King's Field. Start with either KF II (PSX) or KF: The Ancient City (PS2).

Very_Snappy replied 3 months ago
King's Field is a good suggestion, but I've tried them, Couldn't get into them. I really don't like first-person perspective games....I'm always willing to try them but they just don't jive with me, you know? Exceptions abound of course, starting with Wizardry 8 : )

Depths of Peril looks pretty cool but even minimizing the graphics my comp barely runs it : ( I picked up Shining Force EXA. It's pretty terrible but it's brainless and I get to kill things occasionally when they aren't shoving some ham-fisted "story" in my face. From: Killer Kitty | #034 You've basically played all the major "D2 clones" which is what you seem to be looking for. Err, yeah...

Arx Fatalis is pretty cool. However, I really wouldn't call it "brainless" per se. You might be interested in Silver? Obscure PC/Dreamcast RPG. Never played it so I don't know how it is, but it has always LOOKED like a brainless game to me.

Would the Phantasy Online Episode 1 +2 appeal to you? It's hack n slash rpg with loot grabbing. The gameplay is not button mashing. You have to time your attacks. It should work for the WII. But you would need the Gamecube controllers to play the game.

Alien Syndrome That's the game! I got its name wrong. You're the one I heard good things about it from, to boot ^_^. Sorry, I should have specified that I am looking for a classic type of RPG. Sword and Sorcery stuff. RS3 is pretty Sword and Sorcery. One of the chars is a King and you get to play a war minigame with him. But along the lines of more classic fantasy...have you played Dark Sun or any of the Eye of the Beholders? Dark...

Upon the latest update in particular, I also feel compelled to recommend Triangle Wizard on PC. Possibly Lost Labyrinth as well on PC should your PC be able to run it proper.

I've played the Norrath and Dark Alliance games. That's totally what I'm looking for Try the X-Men Legends / Marvel Ultimate Alliance games then. Fallout Brotherhood of Steel is pretty much a brainless game but I found it fun enough to play through. Isn't PSO online only with monthly fees? The Phantasy Star Universe games have offline parts.
