Thread: NYC in Dec - 5 people - 3 nights

Started 4 months, 1 week ago by kaydee
My sister and I have decided to meet up in New York City, along with our three daughters (ages 21, 17 and 16), December 18-21. We're looking forward to being in the city during the holiday season. Kelly and I will fly up and they'll take the train from the DC area. We'll end up with three full days. We want to watch the cost of accommodations and meals, as we'd rather spend $ on shows and ...

Hi Kathy, All subways go to the Financial District, so getting around will not be a problem, even after at night. The only problem with the area is the lack of restaurants, but that is balanced with the close proximity with Century 21 for shopping. Regards, sheryl

If all the sights and activities that interest you are 42nd street and north, doesn't make sense to stay way downtown, whatever its own attractions.

Thanks Sheryl and Marian. I've looked at all the hotel reviews on ST. If anyone has any suggestions of two-room Embassy-Suite type accommodations closer to Midtown, I'd appreciate it. Years ago (I traveled to New York City fairly often, but I haven't been there at all since 1999. I'm not even sure anymore what areas I should be looking at if we wanted to be able to walk to many places we want...

Kaydee - I am not sure if they have two room suites, but you might check out the no frills but amazingly conveniently hotel where we stayed on a visit to NYC in 2006 - the Red Roof Inn at 6 W. 32nd St., between Broadway and 5th Ave. We were very comfortable there, and it was an easy walk to almost everywhere we wanted to go... just a couple of blocks to the Empire State Building, a short walk to...

I honestly don't know of any hotels that will have a suite that sleeps 5 for that price. There are suite hotels in midtown but they are all much higher prices. YOu may want to consider two rooms. I don't think the Embassy downtown is terrible, frankly. You are a subway ride away from everything and the financial savings will make up for the subway ride. And you don't necessarily eat near ...

Kathy, Have you checked any sites like BookIt.com. From my - and others - experiences, you can usually get some very good deals on these discounted sites. Ann

We stayed at that Embassy Suites last December. The girls were on the pull out couch and Chris and I in the bedroom. You would need another cot/bed brought in for the fifth person though. It had a little kitchen area, dining table and two TVs and we thought it pretty good. The closest subway though was a few blocks away, and up and down a raised walkway towards ground zero. I just remember ...

The Financial District is close to the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, South Street Seaport and Chinatown. I did a Google search for "budget hotels in Times Square NYC" and lots came up that are close to, but not at, your price range, but some didn't have all the amenities you wanted (such as The Edison). Perhaps if you have AAA or other discounts you can get a lower price. I saw some low ...

The Financial district would be OK during the week but it is spooky dead on the weekend, that's why the good deal. I also wasn't real impressed by the shopping at 21st Century. The La Quinta on 32nd might be a reasonable compromise. This is a popular weekend in the City so you'll want to make reservations fast. They still have rooms left for $125 so you could get 2. It is not the best ...

Thanks for all the additional info and ideas. It was good to hear Kim's personal experience with the Embassy Suites. We've decided not to stay down in the Financial District though. I'm looking closer to Times Square. We've also decided we'll have to get two rooms. (Two bathrooms will save some time for the five of us too.) Kathy

Ann, that looked like a really nice hotel. It wouldn't be too late to change our plans, but that special rate wasn't available our weekend (the weekend before Christmas). Thanks for thinking of us-- Kathy

Kathy, Is it too late to change your plans should you wish to do so? I just got this information from my weekly Travelzoo list . The location may not be as convenient, but it's not bad. Ann

Hi Colleen, We were there 2 years ago and I've looked back at our trip report (which is on our web) and the only relevant comment was "The Radio City Apartments are great. We have a bedroom with two double beds and a large living area. Well appointed with air-conditioners in both rooms. The location couldn’t be better as we are in an area with a lot of Italian restaurants and cafes two blocks from Broadway and Time Square, right...

Sorry...I know this is too late to help, Kaydee. BUT...if you're going again, check out the "Manhattan East Suite Hotels", now I believe known as "Affinia" hotels. They manage a number of properties in NY as well as a couple in DC and Chicago. I stayed in their hotels several times a month for years and years. The Shelburne was the one we generally were place in, located in Murray Hill. They are all-suite, not sure you...
