Thread: N1H1 vaccine necessary if diagnosed with Type A..

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by M'chele
Both of my daughters tested positive for Type A flu in September.  The doctor did not test for H1N1 specifically because she said that N1H1 was the only Type A going around at the time.  They are giving the H1N1 vaccine to the kids at school, free of charge.  However they are asking for insurance information to keep costs down.  I called my doctors office to find out whether or not they ...

If they are currently sick, they shouldn't get a vaccine period. I would listen to my pediatrician.

They aren't sick.  They got it back in September.

I would double check the CDC website.  IMO, if you feel comfortable with getting the vaccine, and you aren't 100% sure you or your family has had H1N1, then get the vaccine.  I also would maybe get a second opinion. Why are they asking for insurance information when the vaccine is supposed to be free???????

I would give them the vax.  Why not it will not hurt them either way

I think the CDC is covering its ass.  They're not going to say "Don't vaccinate" when there's any chance at all of it not being H1N1, because then when the .01% of kids do come down with it, after being told not to get the vax, they'll probably be held liable.   I personally probably would not have my kids get it, in your case, O.P.  It really doesn't seem necessary.

I have been wondering this as well!

In our area 97% of positive Type A swabs are h1n1. Can you check the website for your local health division and find out what your numbers are. I wouldn't bother vaxing with numbers that high.

It is free to the student whether you have insurance or not.  But if you have insurance, they will file a claim.  The insurance companies will pay to cut costs for the health department.  It's another debate, right?  Either way WE are paying (through taxes or jacked up insurance premiums).  Whatever, I'm glad it's available. I'm leaning toward having them both get the shot.  When explaining ...

Is the health dept. giving it through the school I assume? If so call them, and speak with a nurse/person who can tell you their suggestions.
