Thread: Must-see sci-fi films?

Started 3 months, 3 weeks ago by fantasyescapist
I'm due to watch They Live at the moment, but what others are ones you must watch in a lifetime, that you think are truly great? I'm hoping to be recommended some of the lesser-known, maybe indie films, since blockbusters tend to be rubbish and lazily written. They Live is a great movie. Do yourself a favour and concentrate without distraction on the first 30 minutes, before the action starts and then you'll think "WOW!!!" Recommendation: Capricorn One (1977)

Silent Running. I saw it as a kid and it really had an emotional effect on me. edit- Any original B & W 50's film: The Day the Earth Stood Still, etc. Mynx73

I will do. I'll add that film to my must-see list, then. "Some of their number had been lost and those who had survived were weary"

These range from interesting watches to just great films. See them all if you're looking for Sci-Fi. I'll put a * by the ones I find truly great. Dark City (also check out Director's Cut) Outland Blade Runner Metropolis * 2001: A Space Odyssey Stranded Moon * Sunshine * The Thing * The Day The Earth Stood Still (original) Solaris (Original and remake, * for the original) The Host/...

Here's my list, sorted chronologically. Most of them aren't blockbusters, at least not by today's standards, though a few certainly are - good writing and direction and interesting concepts definitely mean more to me overall than cool FX and lots of action. Top 10 are BOLD : Aelita (1924) Paris qui dort/The Crazy Ray (1925) Metropolis (1926) Frau im Mond/Woman on the Moon (1929) ...

I've added Silent Running to my must-see list. I've ehard great things about it constantly from Mark Kermode (film critic I like). I've seen the original The Day The Earth Stood Still and I own it on DVD. Love it. "Some of their number had been lost and those who had survived were weary"

First two recommended were aforementioned, but I've added The Outer Limits. Thanks. "Some of their number had been lost and those who had survived were weary"

It's from 2001, a really underrated Spanish film. Stars Vincent Gallo and Maria de Medeiros from Pulp Fiction

Definitely watch Contact and Aliens sometime. They're excellent! Though I must say that Contact isn't a typical sci-fi film and there isn't a whole lot of action or anything. In fact, it's almost more of a drama than a sci-fi film. The book, by Carl Sagan, is very good as well. I am Jack's inflamed sense of rejection.
