Thread: Musical vs Theater Speaker - What's the difference?
Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by thenish03
Hopefully some of the knowledgeable people on this great forum can educate me on the the difference between say a "musical" speaker vs a "theater" speaker. I assume that the design of a speaker naturally lends itself towards being able to reproduce music better than other speakers who's main purpose is be used in a theater setting. So what are those design differences that allow for this?
...
If you can explain how any accurate speaker is good for one form of sound and not the other I'd appreciate it. If a 'musical' speaker exists that cannot do HT it probably isn't doing music justice either.
I don't think any such thing exists - there are some who will argue the point - but I don't argue.
Calling a speaker good for HT but not for music always appears to be a way to say "it doesn't sound particularly great but plays LOUD!" Not a particularly ringing endorsement (unless you're on a tight budget...)

This is the way I always read it as well, but I don't know anything....

For Music, I want a full range speaker with great low end response and NO subwoofer. For Home Theater, I consider a good sub a MUST, so low end extension is not quite as important in the other speakers. Take the sub out of the equation, and I agree with the previous comments.

For anyone who thinks there is a difference between listening to music and a listening to movie soundtracks and thus needs different speakers, I'd suggest that if you have access to the Music Choice channels, tune to the Stage & screen channel and listen to a few soundtrack tunes, while not having the actual movie distracting you. other than action, suspense type movies that have a lot of special affects sounds, its a whole lot of...

I agree. A lot of the music scored for movies or classics used in the soundtrack is wonderful and often very well recorded. I tried to make a similar point earlier, in that the large dynamic range and contrast of classical isn't much...
Yeah, but how am I supposed to guess what Klipsch speaker you consider run-of-the-mill-horns, or how was I supposed to know if that list included the Klipschorn, Palladium or Jubilee. You were comparing to 30K speakers, and I don't read minds... No biggie, forget it.

As stated, I do like my HT setup for multi-channel music (DVD concerts, music videos, 7ch stereo, etc.)....
