I largely agree with the author, but he comes off as a self-entitled douchebag. "I can't afford to buy music, so what, I can't listen to it?"

I often buy music in hard copies when i really really enjoy it. I see no point in buying digitally and it baffles me how digital downloads are so high. That said, i like this article for being completely honest!

The sad part is pragmatically speaking we largely decided the answer to this was also "no" a long time ago. Libraries, art galleries, museums, etc. mostly used to be free, it's only recently that they charge admission (although most libraries let you in to look at the books at least for free).

Agreed. Although, I buy a shitload of music.

All of this pointedly ignores the economic realities that musicians must deal with. Well, at this point, I simply point at CEO’s salaries and wash my hands of the whole subject. "These people are poor, but these other people are rich, so I can do whatever I want." Yeah, that's pretty socially responsible and well thought out. Educate the kids? Tell them that while they can get ...

You know what? Fuck the rich.

That's lofty speak for "I'm going to steal music regardless, and there is no real way to defend it because it is still illegal."

Honztastic replied 1 month, 1 week ago
Yeah and if everyone was murdering people murder would be the status quo. That doesn't make it right. I download lots of music, it's still stealing. Even though the only victim is a giant recording industry that has systematically destroyed and exploited all that is good in music in the last twenty years while putting musicians' balls in a collective vice with bullshit contracts. ...

I agree that there would be no penalty for illegally downloading music, despite the fact that that was the worst argument I've ever heard.

legality is just a formality. If legality had stopped young black students from sitting at a segregated lunch counter 50 years ago, white people still might not have access to food with flavor.

I make music. I love making music. Many of my friends are musicians, older guys and girls, who have played in bands in the nineties, back when, record companies made money from PEOPLE BUYING MUSIC. Now we all still make music, but instead of being paid to do it and making it in studios with really good gear and being able to pay our friends to play on our records, we do it ourselves, by working two jobs, to scrape together enough to record at...

yet he could afford it if he stopped buying pot. But I guess his right to consume pot is more important than a musician's right to make money for doing his job. This article has opened my eyes. Wow.
