I think the reasoning for starting the film the way they did is as you said to show that Bobby wasn't special, that this wasn't all about Bobby. We aren't even actually introduced to him when he arrives. We don't meet our main character for nearly 30 minutes and when we do, we don't even realize it for a few more. Its to show that he's just another prisoner here, maybe the one they're telling us about but one...

They weren't bad, and I guess maybe Sean Penn and perhaps Laura Linney deserved to be nominated, but I really didn't see anything win-worthy about their performances. I watched the movie soon after reading the book, so perhaps that was why I noticed it so much. I am Jack's inflamed sense of rejection.
