Mrs.P's 2 year 8800GT 512 is on the blink, and I need to replace it.
She's not a heavy gamer, but likes stuff like World of Goo and Trine, with the occasional Tomb Raider game.
She also does a lot of animation with Blender and Flash, which along with video rendering is mainly all the computer is used for.
Question is, do I buy her a 1Gb ATI 4850/5750/5770, or a new GTS250? Which ...
Is a GTX260 out of the price range?

£112 here.
If the missus uses any software that can use cuda then its an Nv card you want i reckon.
If it was just games i might have a different view.
Thanks aff.
It's card length more than anything else that's the problem, it needs to be between the length of the 8800 and the 4870 (which is too long by about 2 inches...).
The GTX 250/260 were my first choices, but the HD5750 is slightly shorter, cheaper and runs DX11.
I've also got some spare Zalman, Arctic Cooling and Zerotherm after market coolers, so noise/heat shouldn't be...
I agree with Aff, The GTX260 would be a fab card if she will make use of the CUDA capabilities. Sticking with Nvidia would make for a smoother upgrade too. isnt the GTS250 the same size as the 260? so wouldnt a 260 fit? I thought the GTS250 was a re-branded 9800GTX? I'm sure that was the same size as a 260??
...
You'd fit a 10.5" card in there, surely??
J.
I'll have to check - I'll see if i can find some pics of it to show how cramped it actually is in there.
She's got 3 HDD's as well in there, which stick out into the space I need for her card......
I was thinking of buying her a HD 5750 and then putting the NVid card in as a physX card after it comes back from RMA (it's an XFX, so should have a long warranty).
Just done that with ...
don´t get me wrong, but aren´t all of you a little "exaggerating"? playing world of goo, and editing some flash is possible with a X1900XT or sth. like that. If you want to give it a little more power, go for a 9800GT or sth like that, but a 58xx what ever....far to expensive (my oppinion)

Possibly not ideal but just another suggestion to explore.
She's got my old Gigabyte X38 board, which is why I was thinking of ATI if she wants to utilise 2 cards.
I'll give her...

I think you'll fit a 260GTX no problems. My 5870 is only 1(ish)" longer then the mobo is wide. You could put that top HDD beneath the floppy and hit whatever GFX card you'd like. I vote 260GTX (and a new case as a nice cos your special gift) .

She still gets the case.. gets a better GPU...
I think Nv have done their best to scuttle that too, you would need to use older Phsyx drivers maybe, also i think the Ageia cards might not be up to the job anyway from what i have been reading.
