Every now and then a phone comes along that shakes up the market. The Motorola Droid is one such device. Google launched its Android OS last year, but the first edition felt like a beta. The Droid is the first model with Android 2.0, and this new version is ready for primetime, with enhancements in almost every area, from business to entertainment. And Motorola's new model sets a new ...
Ed, nice review...
Looks to be almost identical in size to the old HP Jornadas: 3.7" screen, 6 ounce weight and 0.5" thick. With regards to MS Office, I wonder if there is a version of Open Office for this device? Great device, too bad I'm locked into an AT&T contract...

There are a couple of Android Office apps -- none of them are free, though.

Very nice review. It confirms some of my feelings.
1. I wish the d-pad were on the face of the device, not the slider keyboard.
2. Motorola deserves criticism for many things; BUT their phones always seem to have amongst the best voice quality. Something that can't be said about A LOT of other phones, smart or otherwise.
3. The camera issue proves my point. Megapixels are not a truly...

It's both. It will give you your approximate location almost instantly by using cell towers, and then get a more accurate one with GPS satellites. Time to connect to GPS varies wildly, from 5 seconds to maybe a minute, ...
I found out that my next-door neighbor just got one.
First impressions are pretty good, though as usual for me, I find the screen still a bit small, albeit apparently higher-resolution than most Android devices (which use 480x320).
However, I'm more excited about being able to get some hands-on experience with Android, and 2.0 at that. It's much easier to evaluate any possible pocket ...
I've read that since the Euro version has multi-touch already enabled (including pinch-zoom in browser as seen in youtube videos - not just in the currently available picture marketplace app), it should become available to US owners soon-hopefully before Nov 15th when Verizon plans to hike the 2 yr ETF from $175 to $350! 2 yrs is a long time in these tech times!

Went to buy a Droid and discovered that Verizon doesn't support a global
e-mail plan on Droid. Since I work in Canada a number of months out of the
year, that means paying for data roaming charges, which can end up costing
a small fortune. Other than buying a second Droid in Canada to use while
I'm there, does anybody know of a way around this problem? Or am I going to
have to wait until Verizon ...

So it took less than a month & a work in progress..but a few steps closer: http://forum.androidcentral.com/andr...n-browser.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqU2BuRPHh8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3IuzOKiByk http://androidforums.com/android-app...m-browser.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiZb1jXzOyM http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...rch_type=&aq=f...
Why would Motorola think that Apple would NOT sue them in Europe; but would here? If anything, they have a better shot at suing Motorola in Europe, in the current, respective intellectual property environments.
After posting this question earlier in the thread, I did some research and reading. It seems that the overwhelming thought is that the built in memory would be more than enough for 90% of Droid users. The apps for the Droid average less than 1 mbyte in size so with 250 mbytes of internal memory, you would have more than enough app room. Some of the games can go up to 8 mbytes but these are few and far apart. I think that Santa may bring me a...
thanks, ed. i did not realize that the iPhone tether was non-US only. based on your knowledge and experience, what would you consider the simplest and most cost effective option for intermittent (1-2 hours/month) tethering?
