My Dad has got 2 sticks of PC2100 RAM - 1 is 512mb and 1 is 256mb. Over the weekend we acquired a free second hand computer to replace a graphics issue with his own computer. In the second hand computer is 1 stick of PC2700 RAM, size 512mb. I swapped my Dad's HDD into the second hand computer and also added in his 2 sticks of RAM. In total therefore we have approx 1.250gb of RAM now. ...

The PC2100 ram is slower than the 2700 ram. It is very possible that the timings are set for the 2700. You can check in the BIOS for this. You should be able to set it at a lower speed, which may let the system see the full amount of ram. Something to keep in mind, some motherboards won't work with three memory sticks if they are above a certain size. Example, slot 1 256megs, slot 2 256megs,...
