Thread: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. (MRSA)

Started 2 months, 2 weeks ago by BeBe
My friend's cat has that. They found a human antibiotic to use for him (nothing developed for felines from what I understand). He (Oliver) isn't getting better, the mrsa is resistant to the antibiotic they found. The vet is keeping him and is going to continue to treat him (free of charge, only other option was putting him down and she didn't want my friend to spend all this time, money ...

I don't know about with kitties, but I've worked with humans with this in the long term care center where I'd been employed. We had to take all precautions until the person passed, when they couldn't find one to work. Sometimes, the person's own immune system would help them fight it, but I don't know of it ever truly going away.

oh man. This is just eating at me. I wish there was more info out there. I guess in away it's good (means not a lot of cats get it) but poor Oliver.

Sassy didn't have MRSA but the antibiotic ointment she got for feline acne was supposed to be effective against it. I noticed when I was reading the packaging. It was called mupirocin ointment so if Oliver has some kind of wound or sore its worth asking about this in case it could help him.

Yeah, I don't know where cats carry it, but people do in their noses. When medical staff gets it, they treat with a topical cream there until it goes away. That's different (carrier) than an infection though.

Remember that MRSA is different from regular staph-- very few antibiotics will kill it. Meowma had it deep in her butt muscle a couple of years ago and nearly died before they discovered what it was. She had a choice of daily antibiotic IV's or $80 a pill meds twice a day for three weeks. I'm not trying to be negative, just stating the facts. Maybe the kitty should be tested again to make sure ...
