Thread: Making the Jump to 'Pro'

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by Craig Metz
Alright you pros . . . I am looking for some advice. I just secured $10K in funding to get me started on a part-time photography biz. For a little background, I have been a photographer for about 12 years, and have freelanced here and there for alot of that time. Over the last year, I am getting increased offers for my services, and eventually want to start doing weddings. I do have a full ...

Oh I just wanted to add . . . Currently I am simply looking for an little extra income, I would be thrilled with $10-$20K a year in profit, I realize that will not happen immediately. I have a vast array of contacts in the music business on a local and regional level from a former business I owned. I have a good network in place to get me started, but marketing is an early thing I will need ...

This is the kind of post that bothers me. Why not attach something useful to that statement instead of just being abrasive. It is not a flattering trait, I assure you. Mike_13 wrote: > > Craig Metz wrote: > > > I found Ken Rockwell's site extremely helpful, > > You're doomed...

I think the Ken Rockwell crack was meant tongue-in-cheek. Your equipment looks fine, though if at all possible I'd buy them new and not refurbed. I realize it's expensive, but the last thing you want is for a camera or a light to stop working in the middle of a wedding. With new equipment you are reasonably assured that nothing will go wrong at the worst possible moment -- of course there are ...

Craig, Good luck with your transition to a part time pro. It is a challenging business, and it takes good business skills to succeed. My thoughts about your equipment list might be of some value, and they are based upon 40 years as a pro. You should have three items not on your list: 1) a backup camera body of the same mount as your primary camera, in your case Nikon, 2) a back up flash, ...

I should have mentioned that . . . I will get a 2nd D700 and backup lenses before doing a wedding. As far as refurbs go, I am only doing the camera and the mac. I will buy a backup D700 when the price comes down. Thanks for the post!

Richard- That is very sound advice, maybe a 50m 1.4 would do the trick?

You are correct. Let me reword my post: You're doomed. My advice: avoid Ken Rockwell. (is this better?) Craig Metz wrote: > This is the kind of post that bothers me. I'm sure there is, hidden behind all the "I've never seen this camera but here's my review of it" posts and bashings because something isn't made in his backyard... Is it a good thing to talk about you research, and only using KR's site as a reference? I think ...

I'll try one more time . . . If you have some information that I am obviously not privy to in regards to Ken Rockwell, than please share. If you are just hear to be a thorn in my side, than mission accomplished and you can spend your time on someone elses thread. Thanks. I will never understand people that feel a need to do what you are doing.

I've bought from KEH for years. They are very reliable and have good customer service. Their ratings are very conservative. I've bought stuff they list as "bargain" that looked almost new. I've also bought stuff that was listed as "ugly" that really looked ugly but worked fine.

Craig, The 50 mm 1.4 is a good choice especially if you are shooting in low light because its performance is better in the f2.8 through 5.6 range than other points on the scale. I used the 50/1.8. It was much less expensive and the quality of the lens is amazing. If you buy used, there are 2 versions. One made in Japan and one made in China, with the latter being newer but not as well built although the optical performance is supposed to be...

I was trying to save a few bucks there, but maybe I go with the SB900 instead. If you can find a (used) SB-800 I would pick up that one. Some photographers...
