Thread: Major sabotage

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by lovinlivin34
Well, it looks like my efforts have been derailed. I knew coming into this that I would need help...emotionally and financially. I am a single mom...and probably one of the most financially challenged people on this forum. My dad usually helps me out when I'm in a bind. I came to him and asked for his help with the co pays to at least get this process started...and he says he can't help me and he...

I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm sure it is very frustrating. I can certainly understand about being financially challenged. I am disabled and on a limited income, and I have a LOT of medical expenses, and I get no help at all from my family. Just a thought I had... do you normally get a good-sized income tax refund? Maybe you could use that for your copays. Kelly

thanks, for the reply. I could use my tax return for the co pays...I'll have to delay things and hope they can work me in when i get my refund back. I had to wait a month to go to the seminar and then wait another two months to get an appointment scheduled to start the process....I guess i can try again in March/April.

Will they let you make payments? Does your insurance take applications for hardship waivers? Have you heard of something called Care Credit before? I know how hard it is to struggle, but for things that are important, you have to find a way to make them happen or at least exhaust all possibilities. Your dad didn't pan out, so move on to another solution and take charge of your life.

i'm going to ask about the hardship waiver....i have an account with care credit already...yep, that's messed up-i owe them so much and i have no idea how to pay that account. i'm really in a financial bind on all fronts. i will try to find other ways of doing this. it's so important for my health. i mean i have a daughter that i can't do things with because of my weight and health. she depends ...

Babe, I hate to put another spanner in the works but maybe this isn't the time for you right now. Sadly, the cost of a gastric bypass doesn't end with surgery. There are many people on this forum who struggle from one week to another and some have a serious problem affording the multivitamins and minerals, protein shakes and nutritious foods we must have post-op. My food bill is ...

poet_kelly replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Corrine makes a good point. It is important to consider the costs after surgery. You will have multiple follow up appointments with your surgery, and that's just if all goes well. You will have labs drawn several times in the first year after surgery. I have heard some people say their grocery bills went down after surgery since they don't eat as much and they don't buy snack food or soda...

thanks corrine, I know that i will have a lot of things that will be a challenge. my other option if i don't lose a good amount of weight is to have a shunt put in my brain. i have pseudotumor cerebri...or intercranial hypertension. my spinal fluid doesn't drain out of my body as it should and it causes horrible headaches and vision loss. i had surgery on my eyes to save my vision..i do have some...

I was going to say what Corrine said, i personally spend roughly 40$month on protein (still at 2 years out) and 100$ every 90 days for my bariatric vitamins. (plus the gym and all that stuff) The cost of copays is just the begining and you must consider your suppliments as well

lovinlivin34 replied 1 month, 1 week ago
It looks like the decision has been made for me...anyway. I'll try to save the money and see what happens I don't know how that will happen...but oh well. Hopefully my health will hold up for another couple of years...we will just have to see what happens.

Are the copays for having WLS going to be more than the copays for having a shunt put in your brain? Because I would think having a shunt put in would be expensive, too. Kelly

either way you look at it..i'm going to have to have surgery. the other treatment for the condition i have is for my neurologist to put a shunt in my head...so i'm trying to pick something that will do the most good. I can have my condition improve from having the shunt placed...and then develop other problems from remaining obese for the rest of my life. or i could have weight loss surgery...lose the weight...have this condtion...

For the record, MANY carriers currently base their rates on smoker status. If you smoke, your rates are higher. Perfectly legal and not discrimination. They just feel that smokers are a higher risk for many health issues, thus having to may a lot of claims. They are starting to look at obesity the same way.

I also read a blog called "theworldaccordingtoeggface". She had her RNY done in Mexico in June 2006. You can find her story here . At the very end of her page is this profile (and a link to the clinic she used) : I'm 36 (Ughhh when did that happen?!) I've been the "chubby girl" for as long as I can remember (like everyone else I tried all the diets, pills, gadgets...) I thought about wls surgery a...
