Thread: M14s, synthetic stocks, and the latched trigger guard

Started 4 months, 2 weeks ago by Candiru
I know that its a good idea to leave the trigger guard unlatched in an M14/M1A that's going to be stored for a while in order to avoid crushing the wood through tension and variations in humidity. But is this necessary with synthetic stocks, like the USGI fiberglass versions? Part of the appeal of such stocks is the fact that they aren't affected by humidity, but are they subject to ...

that's kind of an old wives tale. unless you have a fully dressed national match gun, there's not really a need to unlatch it. pretty sure uncle big brother never bothered much with that. just how much do you think aged and finished wood swells?

I'm woefully ignorant about the behavior of wood under various conditions, but it's good to hear that this is a nonissue. Thinking about it, latching and unlatching the trigger guard except when doing a deep cleaning is going to cause its own wear issues.

Some composites such as carbon fiber are several times stroger than steel, I.E. parts used for formula 1 cars. I really don't know why gun owners are weary of synthetic structures. Synthetics are the future of all manufacturing. You should see the carbon fiber Racing bikes, the whole bike is stronger than any steel or alluminum and weighs like 3lbs.
