Ok so I'll more than likely be getting an 870 here pretty soon for work (LE). I'm just wondering how other LEO's have their Tactical Shotguns set up and so on. I just don't really feel like sorting through the whole pic thread that is sticky'd. So if some LEO's wouldn't mind posting their setups that'd be great.
The best selling model from my line to LEO's is the Tactical II....Most LEO's have me upgrade it with an 18.5 fixed modified choke barrel with factory installed Kimber tritium rifle sights. The most popular light they add is the 618LE. This is the model DEA gets from me to a man. Some prefer the Speed Feed IV-S reduced LOP stock or the Remington LE stock with the R3 pad which is also 13" LOP. Of ...

....they will tell you some messed up stuff about ghost rings and optics and pictinney rails and all that other mess that has no place on a fighting weapon....
My department uses 870 in all there cars but they give you the option to use any 12 gauge pump action shotgun. so i use the mossberg 590A1 and have a knoxx recoil reduction stock on it, side saddle, LED flashlight, laser all mounted on a pressure cord fixed to the forend. That's the basics of it also use night rifle sites incase the lazer or light fails.
This all ways starts a fight with the wantabee crowd on verious web sites and I hate to get into it, and being right means I don't have to, but here it is. A Ghost Ring sight is nothing but a peep sight, apperture large. It is mounted at the rear of the receiver and when you come up from the low ready it takes your eye and shuts down your peripheral vision for an instant. those few nano ...

I'm not in LE but from my little experience with Ghost rings they do seem slower to pick up then the bead. I figured it's because I was new to them. I like the simplicity of the bead on a HD shotgun. I use a Meprolight NS that replaced the bead and it works great.
Thanks for all the replies guys. I understand about the GR's. I already have a Rifle and have a bit of training with the AR platform. If I thought I was going to take more distant shots I'd grab the rilfe. The rifle and shotgun are going to be deployed mission dependent. On the shot gun I figure rifle sights would be best. If its not a problem though Id like to see how you guys have them set up, ...
I agree with aippi on this. When I was a cop I carried an 870 with a fully rifled 20" with rifle sights loaded with Remington solid copper sabot rounds. I onced tried the ghost rings but didn't like them due to what has already been pointed out in that when you focus on the sights you lose your peripheral vision. If you don't what rifle sights then just use a bead.
Would it be fair to say that rifle sights are a good compromise for a weapon that will be primarily for home defense but also retain the ability to make slug shots at greater distances if the need arises?

Thats a fair assumption.
