Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by AaronAnderson
Looking for a set of wheels to go on a karate monkey. 29ers, single speed. edit: disc brakes. What are my prebuilt options?

Get a set built up.

AaronAnderson replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
I really want to keep it under 300 or so dollars.... prefer prebuilt I guess. Don't know why. Looking for specific recommendations.

Not going to have much luck finding a good prebuilt ss 29er wheel around that price. There's the Easton wheels, but those are $400 over your budget.

http://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...Er+Wheels.a spx Can use this set and just space a cog on the cassette. The only other option really is to go custom build.

Is that three hundred for one wheel? You can get something pretty solid for that price. And of course you can always use a geared wheel with spacers. A lot of singlespeed hubs are just narrower cassette bodies anyways.

Use a cheap fixed gear wheelset (29er is just 700c, afterall) and spin on a BMX freewheel. j

Keep in mind that many fixed gear bikes are ridden pretty hard and so the rims you find on some of those wheels are pretty stout. Finding one that is cheap and wide enough would...

http://lacemine29.com/ The bestest wheelbuilder I know of.....builds only 29 wheels & does it right (spokes are still holding excellent tension after 18 months of abuse)

I'd use a non SS specific hub. That gives you more options for resale later. You can get a hot set of wheels built up for around $500 - the wheels on my SS 29er are XT hubs with Stans Arch rims and the tubeless kit. I think I paid $540 built and shipped to my house.
