Things You Need to Know to Before Moving Up to Windows 7 http://www.retrevo.com/my/5875/artic...75?cmpid=Em ail
Windows 7 has been getting favorable reviews for over a year. It has
been reported that it was running on more than 8 million computers by
the time it officially launched on ...
Hey gang,
I wanted to ask this here, as I know there are a few folks here pretty
familiar with Windows 7, and I am discussing a 64 bit OS :).
I am planning on purchasing Windows 7 Professional upon it's release, and
installing the 64 bit version. I currently run Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
If I understand correctly, Professional in Windows 7 will be all I need, ...
Thanks Charlie, but I will be starting with a clean hard drive in a new
system build, replacing the motherboard , processor in my current system.
So I would need to install my Vista Ultimate version first prior to
installing Windows 7 Pro upgrade?
I was hoping I could just do a clean install of Windows 7?
Thanks,

Yes, you can buy the upgrade version. But no, you can't do a direct upgrade
install. You'll need to install clean. You can go from Business to Ultimate,
but not the reverse.
I believe that the mechanism will be install from inside the existing Vista
Ultimate, however, not booting from the DVD and installing from there.
I recommend running Windows Easy Transfer from the Windows 7 DVD ...
I don't believe it will allow that on an upgrade copy, but since I don't
have one to test with, I can't be sure.

Ok thanks Charlie for the info.
I would hate to think I would have to do a complete install of my Vista
Ultimate just to be able to install Win 7, but if that is the way it is then
that is how it is. Will be interesting to find out for sure.
I was hoping to keep it simple by planning my motherboard/cpu replacement at
the same time as getting Windows 7. I guess I could always spend the ...

I know it's late to respond to this, and I apologize for the bump, but I just referred to this post elsewhere--and want to return for a courtesy often forgotten:
Thanks, "fivengo" for offering an alternative; it saved me time, and certainly will for others. Cheers.
That's because when you put the computer in hibernate an image of the current state of the OS you're in is saved to the hard drive. When you bring it out of hibernate the system is restored to the state of the image saved to the hard drive. The system is not booting from a Zero state is why you don't see a boot manager OS selection screen. Nothing Magic! On 2009-12-10 15:47, Tom Orle wrote: >...

Arthur, The only minor inconvenience you may find with this procedure is that Windows 7 will name its partition on the second drive as "C:" and Vista will likely become "D:". This is not a big issue because when you boot Vista it will still sit in "C:". If you want partition letters to remain as they are, simply lauch the installation from Vista. Put your Win 7 DVD in the drive and wait...
Hi, Alsenor. I agree with Tom - and take it one step further. For the past 7 years or so, I've formatted each of my HDDs with a single small primary partition and put the rest of each disk into an extended partition, which I divide into multiple logical drives. Each Windows installation goes into its own logical drive; other logical drives are for Data, Downloads, Photos, etc. Each data volume is fully accessible from each OS. And each...
If you want a clean install of Windows 7 on your second drive, boot from the Windows 7 disk, select Custon install when prompted and then in the next screen "Where do you want to install Windows 7" select Drive options (advanced) and delete the partitions on your second disk. Highlight the now empty space as where you want Windows 7 installed and hit Next. The Windows 7 installer will partition and format the disk as...

Some programs use setup.exe only for a front end to a .MSI file in which case you may be able to get around the 16-bit problem by right-clicking (delayed launch) the .MSI file and choosing Install from the context menu, or double-clicking the .MSI file (immediate launch). Win7 is solid and stable and I have switched to it from XP on my main PC, I tried Vista but didn't like it. You mentioned you have a laptop - if it has an Intel chipset then check the driver situation before moving to Win7. Many Intel drivers are *NOT* included with Win7. Although some come down in system update there is currently no Win7 driver for the Intel Extreme graphics card.
Peter: If you did an upgrade from Vista Eset recommends "If you are using ESET Smart Security and upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7, we recommend you uninstall and then reinstall ESET Smart Security after the operating system upgrade." I'm running Nod32 and no conflicts with Windows Defender have been noticed including during beta testing. -- Dennis Pack Win-7 Enterprise x64, Win-7 Professional x64....
