Thread: Longest Day: How far have you pushed yourself?

Started 3 months, 1 week ago by Tweed-Strom
I'm fairly new to the world of adventure riding / touring on a motorcycle having picked up a Dl1000 only last spring. I'd made short trips on my other bikes but never ventured farther than a few hundred kilometers in a trip. Recently I ventured from my home up to see my buddy in Thunder Bay. A trip that, by my planned route, would run 1700+km each way and I planned on dividing it equally ...

My longest day was 1428k's I had bought a bike in the US and was riding it home. I wish I'd stayed on to break that magic 1600 mark. As long as the roads are flowing and it all feels good I'll usually ride till dark. I try not to ride at night too much. I had a very good friend nearly killed by a deer hit.

1300-1400 kms is about the longest day I've ever done, and ironically, that was on a VFR750. Banff to Victoria, roughly. I remember getting off the bike when I rolled onto the BC Ferries and I literally lay on the ferry deck for quite a while, physically sick and unable to move. I meander a lot, and a "long" day for me when I'm road-tripping is 600kms or so. I wouldn't do too well at ...

Not that it's a lot of miles, compared to some of the posts, but I did Inuvik to Dawson, in the rain on my v-strom. On Tourances; wasn't so bad. This summer I did 900 km on my KTM 690-- maybe 100 km of gravel and the rest pavement; on and off rain, MT 21's, stock seat, and a helmet with a visor that I couldn't remove. My ass felt like what those baboons with the red butts look like. My head was...

1620 km, just to say I did it, on my KLR 650. 1200 km on a Burger 400, but that hardly counts,it's like riding an easy chair.

5am, to 430am the next morning, in the mountains, ran out of gas. Walked 21km's in full atgatt, and rode a mountain bike 21kms in full atgatt same day, after riding 3/4 of the hardest core terrain on a 950SE I ever did. One breakfast bun, two small chocolate bars, one can coke. Got hypothermia/severe deyhdration in mountains, dear Mom picked me up on the highway at 430am after an emergency ...

I've ridden home non stop from Laguna Seca in Salinas to Langley BC many times. My longest non-stop was an Iron Butt challenge, did 1695km's in 18 hrs, and 3100kms in 30.5 hrs. Never do it again, a waste of tires, gas, and dodging deer/bear. Steve

Hmmmn... Been lotsa long ones over the years. Not trying, just had to be home and I was out of money and time. Flagstaff Arizona to Mississauga Ontario, 2400miles/3840kms in 48 hours on a '78 R100S BMW. But that was easy, I was young and the bike was smooth as glass. Fredrickton NB to Hamilton ON, 1500kms in 12hrs stopping for breakfast, lunch and dinner enroute on an '83 R100RS BMW. Doesn't Quebec have any police? 800km days on...

Granby QC to Moncton NB via secondary roads. Just over 1000 kms and 14 hours if I remember right. I stopped as the moose were starting to show up. I too stood up for about 1/4 of it on my 640a.
