You know ones like this.
Only someone of french heritage would chose such a wimpy rifle. Me personally if I could not have an Ar I would be using an AK.

Ironic that you posted the two rifles that I beat you with on the last departments qualifications...even with your AK equipped ...
Well I bought a Mini 14, an AK and an SKS before I bought an AR, so they would probably be what I would have.
But assuming that the AR15 had not been invented, then the military would be using something else besides the M16/M4. Which means I'd probably end up with a semi auto version of whatever they would be using now.
If I had to choose, I'd go with my CETME. I've shot it enough to know its reliable, got a ton of spare parts thanks to G3/HK interchangability, mags are about 2 bucks each for 20 rounders. I have a couple of AK variants, but they ...
I've had great luck with my MSAR bullpups, Daewoo AR-100 and DR-200, the Sig 556, DSA FAL's, Springfield M1a, and Robinson XCR. Of course I found a few things I didn't like about each of them, but I also found a lot of advantages they had over the AR-15 in specific areas.
The only ones I kept were a few AK's (still my favorite), a pair of Colt AR-15's, and a pair of MSAR bullpups. I would ...

Most of the AR's poor reputation comes from soliders not issued cleaning kits in Vietnam. In fact you don't even really need to clean them all that often. You do need to keep them lubed. If you do that they will run and run. Pat Rogers has an AR with over 40K rounds through it without cleaning...

Never could trust it after that. Pat I've heard stories like that too. I've also heard of guys who have run them hard with no problems, maybe the reinforced them better at some point. I bought mostly because it was the first one I ever seen. I still...
