Hello My sister teaches in a school in Cleveland and has recently moved my mother into her home to care for her. My mother has heart disease and has now been diagnosed with Cancer which is inoperable. My sister is hoping to cut her hours at work by half in order to care for her mother. No, she wouldn't be entitled to full pay, however she may be entitled to a carers allowance and it would be worth speaking to the benefits office. I wouldn't have thought that there was any legal entitlement to time off. I would offer to go part-time (0.6 or 0.5) for a year in the first instance. This way the school can offer a temporary one year contact to some one else, and she ...

Thats really helpful thanks. I dont think she will get a carers allowance as you have to be earning less than £95 per week and I think the allowance is just £55 per week anyway.
