Thread: Leagues top incomming Frosh

Started 2 months, 1 week ago by ZSparky
I have too much time on my hands obviously. I just did a search on all of the freshmen listed on the BW prospectus, and noted the Scouts rating and position ranking on all that were ranked. Here is the list. Player-------------Position------Scouts Grade---Pos Ranking-----School Kyle Richardson.......SF..................89........... .........#31.................LB Ryan Howley...............

I thought Chris Brew was more highly regarded than that. Weren't some Gaucho fans saying he was a top 100 or so prospect?

Good info, thanks for putting that together.

I thought Brew was at least a 3 star in the ranking-something just doesn't seem right?

Ryan Sypkens is going to shock a lot of people this year, the kid can flat out play.

Brew was in scout's top 100 as a soph, which is when he verballed to UCSB. The knock on him is that he has all the athleticism in the world but poor fundamentals.

At the time Chris Brew committed to play at UCSB (Junior year) he was rated the #87 prospect in the country by Rivals and Top 100 in other publications. He also had offers from Washington and USC according to Santa Barbara News-Press before committing to play for the Gauchos.

His high school team played playground basketball where he excels. In a structured offense, which just about all colleges play, he can be a liability. He's just not a very good outside shooter. His athleticism is off the charts, though, and he's a real hard worker. He'd better be, if he ever hopes to be do much at the D-1 level.

He went from a high-major prospect to a low-major in one year. Methinks he is somewhere in between. For benchmarking, he is bigger and more athletic than his older brother Will, Jr., and not quite as good defensively. Will improved his shooting mechanics tremendously his freshman season, and Chris will also have to.

Yep, I saw both brothers play in high school, and it looked like Tarkanian's UNLV teams. Their opponents were overmatched athletically, but smart, good-shooting opponents would cause St. Mary's problems. The hustle was there, so that's all you could ask for. They need to develop basketball skills, which is surprising, given their pedigree. Will, Sr. played on Ralph Miller's disciplined ...

It was mentioned by some UCSB fans that Chris Brew's stock went down because he verballed to a mid-major (UCSB) early. The logic being "if this guy verbaled to Santa Barbara, he can't be of high major caliber. The unusual circumstances in this case being that CB verballed early. Have fans of other BW schools seen something similar happen with any of your recruits? Or is that theory BS?

Don't get me wrong, I think LB is loaded with thalent, and eventually I expect we have the horses to be extremely good. But, looking with my head instead of my heart, this is what I see. SB and LB both had great freshman classes last season, and they both rode a senior star, Devine for SB and Morris for LB. These freshman classes matured greatly as the season progressed, but because Morris went down LBs guys ended up having to carry the...

Z, good reasonable post and one I can agree with a lot of. having said that, I won't jinx it and will declare LB the prohibitive favorite, as the coaches and media have dubbed them. LB has always attracted athletic talent, but their lack of coaching did them under most of the time. With Monson, they don't have that hurdle anymore.

Z-Spark, that was a well-thought out post and I appreciated it. If nothing else, we're more inside your head for how you perceive this LB team. But, I still think there's no denying that LBSU is the class of the league this upcoming season. If O. Johnson has a smooth transition at UCSB, then maybe we can accept that the Nachos will be indeed the top of the pops. But, on paper, everyone knows Long Beach State is the best team in this...

The only thing on paper that counts is money. We want the BWC title and the NCAA berth. Forget the prognostifications. Let the games begin.
