As an immigrant myself, I like to tell people who question whether or not I'm a "real" American that I chose to become one and I had to earn it, rather than simply be born into it. EDIT: Grammar, damn ESL.

I think it's rooted in a muddying of the word 'immigrant'. It's the same thing that has happened in the UK. If you say the word 'immigrant', it no longer means 'someone from abroad'. It means 'someone here to scrounge from our country, live on welfare and dilute our culture'. I think this suspicion has become unfairly applied to certain types of people, and deep down it's because they're a ...

I think you should spend some time living in southern California. Your idea of "immigrant" might become jaded as well. It's not racism. It's the fact that southern California has become a hotbed of illegal immigrants who 1) don't speak English 2) contribute virtually nothing 3) show up to have kids (paid for by taxpayers) who are then citizens and 4) don't carry insurance, so when they ...

2) contribute virtually nothing Have you ever eaten fruits or vegetables? Stayed in a clean hotel room? Eaten at a restaurant? More than likely, an illegal immigrant contributed to that.

Yes, this is the problem. Illegal immigrant != Immigrant. If you want to complain about illegal immigrants then that's certainly a valid thing to do. The problem is legal immigrants of a particular color are treated as though they're here illegally, to scrounge.

So, why are we only associating illegal immigrants with Mexicans? What about the large number of Polish and other Slavic people who come over here illegally? Chicago and the surrounding area is filled with them. If Spanish is Chicago's second language, then Polish is it's third. But that's not relevant is it; because issues of national origin only come into play when associated with ...

See, this guy here is the problem. Always crying "racist" when racism is not the issue at all. The reason i didn't mention polish or slavic illegals is because (shocker) I haven't lived in Chicago. I DID however live in Southern California, and that's what i experienced. I think YOU are a problem... More so than the actual racists. Why? Because racists can be ignored, and generally ...

"It's not racism, but here's some racist attitudes to back me up." Screw you and the boat your people rode in on. I've worked with plenty of undocumented immigrants. I have the feeling you've hardly met any at all based on your Glen Beck worldview. The people I worked with were some of the hardest working, selfless, most giving members of our society I've ever met. The only ones who ...

What is a nation anyway? A race? A collection of people happening to live in one place? People that feel they belong together? In fact, any of those doesn't apply properly to any country, let alone America. The idea of "belonging to a country" is a completely man-made concept: at the end of the day we're all just humans.

No black is what they use. The rest of us say american. I thought it was about recapturing a part of their identity that was brutally taken from them. From who? No black person today was a slave. So all black people, or at least the same people who began to use the term African-American, got together and "mobbed" a guy for calling himself African American. Yes, all because of skin color. Very sad.

-151 Karma? I won't feed the troll more than this: I said it is "reasonable to at least question whether there are some inherent natural differences in East Africans and a Wisconsin man". I did not say differences between blacks and whites, rather people of a specific geographical region may have evolved differently over the last few centuries, so much so that there are new biological realities caused by drastically different...

You prefer Mestizo? Fine , call them "Spaniards with a tan", I don't care, if they are not here legally it does not matter if they are British, illegal is illegal. You bleeding hearts use the term "undocumented" If I go to the store and steal something, can I just say I have "undocumented" merchandise? Mexicans have no legal claim to California, period, unless they are legal residents.

Technically correct, however this is splitting hairs. In the context of the article and discussion we're referring to "international immigration" which most people use the term immigration to mean; especially in the article OP linked to, and by extension in resulting discussions here.
