Thread: Large and Heavy unknown speaker score.....

Started 7 months, 1 week ago by vinyldavid
Hey guys Just got a very large, very heavy pair of speakers.....make unknown. The woofers need to be refoamed, of course. Strange thing about them is they have a 6 pin jones connector connecting the woofer box to the seperate tweeter array. This array feels like it has something pretty substantial in it...but it's got white fabric covering over it that's stapled to the bottom....

Leak 2075? Although the woofers don't have foam surrounds, it's possible someone has replaced them as they're not the most robust of drivers.

There was a big early KLH with a seperate tweeter array, but I don't think the woofers used foam. The tweeter array didn't have a power cord did it? If so it might be RTR or Janszen, or, I suppose, Fulton. Interesting...

well, I gave it a bit of a listen today. One of the woofers I did not remove from the cabinet to refoam, so I wired it up to a mono radioshack PA amp, and started listening. Still have not reglued the dustcaps. In my dining room, which is admittedly not the best acoustics...I was kinda disappointed. The bass is kinda one-notey, altho this is a virgin foam. Also, it was quite overpowering. As to the rest of the freq response, it sounded like...

Don't half ass this! Put the dust caps back on, get em BOTH 100% done. Make sure all HF drivers are at least playing and use a real amp! Also get them out of your dining room, to really get them running. IMO new foam "breaks in" after about 5 minutes. You can do it David

They look like somebodies home brew answer to the Dahlquist DQ-10. The 5 inch mid is a Phillips AD5060 (same as DQ-10 used) the other mids and tweeters also look like early 70's phillips units that have had their front flanges/lenses removed. Interesting design mite sound good...

It's an interesting design. Would be interested to know how they sound after repairs.
