Thread: Laptop printer for college student??

Started 2 months ago by inluvstill
Okay, I need your help again guys and gals!! My son wants a printer to take to college. They do get free prints at school up to a certain amount but everyone he is talking to in the dorm he picked out said that they recommended buying a printer because it is too far to trek out in the middle of the night when doing that last minute assignment, report, so on... Are there printers that are made ...

They do make portable printers, but they're really designed for traveling salespeople and are easily 3x - 4x the price of regular printers. They also tend to be single sheet fed, which would be a major pain in the butt for multi-page reports. They also run right off of USB and do not require a separate power cord. But $180 - $350 for a substandard inkjet is not really the way to go. ...

there are portable printers for laptops but they're a bit pricey and consumables are through the roof! If he has the space, I would recommend an all-in-one (doesn't have to be document feed) for the unknown needs of college life. Kodak printers are said to have the lowest consumables cost FOR INKJET (ink and printheads if needed) and aren't too big. A wireless one would be preferred by ...

He can just take your printer - as long as it uses a USB port. That's what mine did.

Thanks everyone!! I would send him with mine but I work at home and use it quite a bit, not to mention I have 3 other children here using it too!! UGH! He actually asked for it for Christmas, along with some other college essentials, as he has already bought himself the PS3 and some games he wanted because he could not wait until then!! BOYS! I would love one that does not cost a lot for ink ...

For school, I would get an inexpensive laser printer. You can get a decent one for around $50-$100, and it is much better for printing papers and such. You loose the ability to do color, but "if" there is a need for that, you can always do some printing at the local Kinkos, etc. I really like Brother Laser printers for the value that they offer. They run around $100 for a basic model, and...

This is one of my favorites: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16828113 291 The idea that even though it is a little bigger... since it is wireless, if you set up an access point in the room, you could put the printer just about anywhere that you want. The one that Marc linked is nice as well. Samsung makes good laser printers as well.

Great advice guys...I knew you guys would know what to do! Right Marc, the printing in his dorm room would just be mainly for convenience. He does not actually need it until next summer but asked for it for Christmas......though I am not against waiting if needed. Do you think they will have laser printers on sale for Christmas or do you guys think I would be better off waiting until school ...

For what its worth, I'm 2 years out of college and I hardly ever printed anywhere other than on campus. I had a good printer but it was free to print up to a certain amount of pages each semester and I never hit that amount. If I had a last minute project I would usually be in the library or a computer lab anyway as dorms or college apartments (at least for me) weren't hotbeds of efficiency. Also, at my college at least there labs...

I actually would save it to my flash drive and take it to the lab before class to print it off, or email it also like wild4mn said. It's true what they say that it's hard to get work done in the dorm, usually they have the labs open pretty late. But anywho, I have a Canon Pixma iP1700 hooked up to my laptop, so far it has been great! The printer is super easy to use and its slim enough that it fits on my little work desk which is a...
