I'm sure this has been asked before, but a 3 year old thread doesn't really help. I'm looking for a laptop for college, planning to spend between $500 and $900. I just need it for basic computing, no crazy gaming or anything. Hopefully 2+ gig ram, 200+ gig hdd. My main question is, are there any brands that people would recommend or avoid? My bro has had an HP for 4 years, and that thing has been...
I'm the senior desktop support technician for a University and everything we buy anymore is Dell, so I'm a little partial. I have always had good luck with them and for the most part they put out quality stuff.
I would suggest looking for a Latitude, or if they are too pricey go for the Inspiron.
Here's a little something I threw together in your price range:

Dell, or HP ordered online, NOT from a retail store. I've had good luck with Lenovo recently as well. Some great deals at tigetdirect.com based on your budget.
I've always had good luck with Dell. I did have to replace a motherboard in my old laptop, but they had no issues replacing it for me.
Good choice on going with a laptop, though. It comes in real handy for college. It makes it easier to do homework, etc since you don't need to find a computer lab or go back to your dorm/apartment to get work done. It's very helpful, too, even for math/...

If you can swing it, I would probably get the 3 year, but that's just me. They offered a free upgrade to a 3 year plan on mine and I didn't need to use it until the 3rd year. Your laptop will likely take ...

I was looking at this one for my wife, but since I found out yesterday that her car has a cracked block I don't think she's getting a laptop anytime soon.

He's had it for a while, had multiple problems, and ended up being charged for most of them, as bestbuy's warranty doesn't cover a large...
I've heard a multitude of things on the batteries over the years. In my experience, there is no rhyme or reason as to how long they last. I'm sure if you leave it plugged in as-in "charging" all the time, that heat will probably reduce the life. I always charge and then try to use it until its about drained before recharging. Someone with more knowledge on this can charm in. Oh, and also, we have had laptop...

Then again, the Onion doesn't cut corners on this...
I just bought a Lenovo. I wanted a 14" multi-touch screen, so I had few options. When I was looking, I was surprised at the plethora of laptops with crappy keyboards - flat and slick - a configuration that would make touch-typing difficult. The only laptops currently available with 14" multi-touch screens are HP, Lenovo and Toshiba. The HP and Toshiba had the crappy keyboard, so I went Lenovo. As mentioned above, if...
