Thread: Lantus/Levemir in left butt cheek.....WHY??
Started 3 months ago by PokesforLife
We are still MDI, Ryan wants to go to G&G cabin. I am very ok with this. I trust my mom and Ryan is 14 and does his own care daily. I still do his Levemir night shot because he can't find a spot he can reach that doesn't hurt when he does it.
A couple times that he has recently done it himself he has done it in his left thigh.
Do any of you see a problem with this?? He will be doing ...
We were told to do Lantus in Janie's bum becasue of the way the insulin is absorbed, lots of nice cushy fat for it to work it's way through. I don't think which cheek matters. Janie got to where she could do Lantus shots herself, and she did do them in her left cheek, but only because that was the easiest for her to reach - she's right handed. Have him try both cheeks to see if either side is ...
Hummm....I may be incorrect in say this, but I was told they could receive injections in the back of the arms above the elbow, the behind, the thighs and the stomach. Griffen does all of his own injections in the stomach. On occasion I give one in the arm. We're not on Levemir...does that have something to do with it?
Huh...
hmm, never heard that the left cheek was better But always told to turn the other cheek LOL, sorry. We rotate from cheek to cheek with Steven. Our endo said to use the upper, outer, quadrant for shots.
I believe Levemir is the same as Lantus, a slow acting insulin. It's supposed to be given in the bottom due to how it absorbs.
Fast acting insulin can be given in the arms, legs, and stomach.
I don't think it specifically has to be in a particular cheek, but I always do Danielle's Lantus in her rear. The Lantus pools beneath the surface of the skin and crystallizes and then slowly begins to work. I think people choose to give it in the rear more often because there is more fat and more space. If he wants to give it in the thigh for the week, and it is absorbing properly, it should ...
Thanks you guys!!! I got sooooo much info at Dx, I just couldn't remember why, I have just been doing as I was told, ya know what I mean!!
The few times he has done it in his thigh his numbers have actually turned out better that day, I guess I just figured because it was a fresh spot???
I wish I could get an Endo opion on this but he leaves tomorrow and my parents just invited them (...

Us too. We put the levemir in his arms, butt, stomach and legs. Never had any problem and was never told any differently by endo.
Because it's longer lasting, the ped endo who put me on Lantus said I had to put it in my butt, where supposedly there's more fat (I don't think there was at the time).
My current endo and I have talked about actual research studies on insulin absorption in various parts of the body, and he agrees with me that it's not so important to put the Lantus in my butt; however, I put it there anyways ...
I wish I could get Joey to read this thread. No matter what the endo and I tell him, he absolutely refuses to take his shots anywhere except his thighs. Even though Ive offered to do them for him ( his Lantus). To the OP, our boys are the same age - can I ask how you got him to do this?
When Kaleb was on Lantus he only used his cheeks. However, I have never heard anything about it having to be the left cheek. Is he right handed and that is why they said to use the left, maybe a little easier for him to reach?

I used my thighs or butt for lantus, and found them to be equally good.

maybe different since I was an adult, but when I was still on MDI, I took my Lantus in my thigh, back of arm or abdomin, I have never used my backside for any shot I have given myself.
