Thread: LX3 owners: do you find it's zoom lacki...

I'm currently debating between buying a LX3 and a Canon PowerShot G11. The fact that the LX3 can do 720p video is pretty huge for me (I'll primarily be doing photos, but being able to take good video is a big plus) and so I'm heavily leaning towards it. However my only real concern at this point is it's 2.5x zoom (compared to the G11's 5x zoom). Do you find yourself often desiring more zoom ...
huh.. That is the question the every second person that considering LX3 asks here. Nothing bad in it really. ..but let me answer it in non ordinary way: are your eyes enough for you to see the world around or you always walk with pair of binoculars on shoulder? :D

I skimmed the recent threads and didn't see anything on the matter. Guess I shoulda searched more thoroughly. > ..but let me answer it in non ordinary way: are your eyes enough for you to see the world around or you always walk with pair of binoculars on ...

My old Canon was just 3X, but not that wide to begin with, thus covering 35-105mm vs. 24-60mm of LX3. Not that I found it limiting me in any way. As some good photographer said "If your photographs arent ...
The difference isn't quite so much the "x times" ranges of the zooms, as their overall coverage - one runs at the equivalent of 24/60mm, and the other at 28/140mm. It may help to take a look at how you've used your current camera, and one good way to do that is with ExposurePlot, a clever little analysing program, that's available here: http://www.vandel.nl/ This is the result of a test on the...
After using the LX3 for six months now, I haven't once missed a longer zoom. The 2.5 zoom is just about right for proper framing and portraits, and for other shots, I guess I simply moved in closer.

You get used to it but there are some things it just can't do - mainly where you need a LOT of zoom - and in that respect a superzoom camera is a good complement for the LX3.
One way to solve this tricky question is to look at your very own habits. Have you ever used another digital camera with a longer zoom? If so, how often did you shoot above 60mm (eq.)? When I was considering purchasing a LX3, I just computed some stats regarding all the pictures I shot in the last 7 years with my late Olympus C-2020Z digicam. What came out: >95% of them shot below 60mm! On top ...
I have a LX3, and I sometimes miss to have a longer zoom. Any image with wild animals is impossible. Domesticated animals can very well be photographed. But they'll try to lick the camera when they are close enough to fill the frame. Elephants may be an exception. :-) http://u1.ipernity.com/12/43/31/5874331.1ef51f08.1 024.jpg The LX3 is a great camera for interiors where it is relatively dark ...
I found my 39 - 390 mm pocket superzoom's f3.5 lens was too often too slow and too narrow. The LX3's f2.0 wide lens complements it perfectly. In any case, the 50 mm lens of my first camera seemed to be satisfactory for most of my shots, and I made do with it for about 20 years. The LX3 also has a number of bells and whistles which, though rarely needed, are quite useful in particular, less ...

There's no doubt about it that the ZS3/TZ7 zoom range is ideal for general purpose photography. But for specialised use and good shutter times at low ISO in worse light, then the LX3 works fine. In my case I was more distressed about spoiling low light shots than losing tele shots, so I went the LX3 way and am happy. Love that f/2 lens and larger sensor. Coming from a DLSR habit where I had 22mm-300mm equivalent available I found that I...
Some people just see choosing one camera over the one they own as a personal insult. No matter how logical your argument is, it won't help much in discussion with them.
I think I'm sold on the LX3. I analyzed about 300 photos I took on a recent week long trip with my current P&S and the graph speaks for itself: http://pic.phyrefile.com/v/vi/viper007bond/2009/11/07/focallength.png

I was thinking to buy another one, just in case mine dies one day, and I would have the replacement... LX3 is almost a perfect design from Panasonic. Guy, you understand completely. These are complimentary cameras with neither able to completely replace the other. Speaking of "fanboys" I now recall why I put Trensamiro on ignore the other day...

More /useful/ perhaps but not more _feasible_, unless you want to jump over 5 rows of seats, a 20-feet wide pit, and swim your way across the pool to the other side, as seen in this other pic, taken from the _exact_ same location as the other but at *25 mm* instead of 300 mm. That's...
