Thread: Kiwi scratchbuilt - Page 5 - GT40s.com

Started 2 years, 2 months ago by Russ Noble
Well I was up at 4 am this morning to watch Hamilton live winning the F1 drivers championship. That never happened! Now 19 hrs later I am feeling a bit stuffed and have decided to flag work on the car for the night and post a quick update. I have been building the exhausts the last few nights. This is very satisfying as there is heaps of progress to show for a relatively small amount of work...

Some photos of the exhausts. Because room is somewhat restricted around the back of the motor, I decided it was easier to put the collectors in place and then work back from there. Photos here of the rhs headers show them half finished. A bit of a mission because they had to go under the rollbar backstay and over a diagonal brace which goes from the crosstube between the shock mounts by the...

Lhs exhausts. These had to be routed under both the rollbar backstay and the rollbar diagonal brace. As well as this of course, I was trying to keep all the primaries equal length and as short as possible while at the same time being able to easily get at the spark plugs, header bolts, head studs and also be able to get the rocker covers off. I also wanted a rotational firing order in the ...

Go Russ. These projects you go to sleep thinking about it and wake up thinking about it. Your chassis looks more bird cage p4 come dino 206 ish. Jim

Russ Noble replied 2 years, 2 months ago
Haha Jim, I wouldn't think about it half as much, were it not for your emails! I'm trying to build the chassis as light and stiff as possible. Everything that doesn't have stressed alloy panels fixed to it is round tube. The engine is a stressed member and should stiffen up the whole rearend. I'm trying to keep the chassis design as 'pure' as possible. The compulsory rollcage weighs a ...

Brian, I'm hoping to have the car at all the SFOS meetings. It's going to be tight because we have had quite a few holdups this year with some parts experiencing availability problems or shipping delays or going astray. Also the odd issue with suppliers etc. But car or no car, I'll be at Teretonga just to watch the CanAm's racing! Cheers

Russ, are you planning on radius rod style rear suspension?? What do you plan on attaching to??? Looks really tight for an intake too.....no Webers for you ..eh! That looks like a really easy tube chassis to repair... .......I know..I know I couldn't resist...

Ummm, front mount plate-exhaust-rear cage diagonal? Do you have to remove in order to R&R Engine/Trans assy? Jac Mac

Russ Noble replied 2 years, 2 months ago
Damn, Jac Mac I never thought about getting it out! You should know better than that . Actually the muffler will have to come off (2 bolts), then the whole rollcage backstay assembly which includes the crossbar between the shocks, and the rear body support framework, all one unit, has to be removed (4 nuts and 5 bolts). Then 4 bolts each on the front and rear motor plates and she's ...

Exactly right guys, but there is no room to run the stays forward to the engine mount bosses and also that doesn't cure the chassis flex situation. Now, since the motor is solid mounted, it is much easier to kill the two birds with one stone and tie the trans into the chassis, as I have done, and this will stiffen everything up. QED

Russ IRS Commodores and I guess Falcons use a double row ball bearing as per picture. This type of bearing is also common is FWD vehicles In the case of the Commodore I think from memory they are 37 X 72 x 37 or close to that. Corvette is the same arrangement I believe This bearing is also used on the front of Nissan Skyline, Cefiro etc A heavier version of this is used in the front of the Skyline turbo 4WDs

Russ: Looks and sounds great, I know the audio doesent do that motor justice, I'll bet it sounds sweet in person. Your chassis looks better every time I see it. Cheers Phil

Russ, You have got most of it right, not one but several unforced errors whilst exploring.... no damage other than my ego which was well and truly over inflated before this weekends racing. Dont want to hijack your thread so have tried (unsuccessfully) to post a few photos on the paddock thread

There is no relative movement between the dogs and the gears once the dog is pressed onto the gear. The slider is the only moving(sliding) part to engage the gear. The slider slides on the hub the same way Hewland does. Yes, you can re-grind the dog to make is usable, only up to the certain point before you don't have enough dog left .

Russ, If the problem is with the end of the muffler, you should be able to add a couple of tabs to hold it steady. The trans support That I made came from a local Ace hardware from hollow round stock. It uses the trans bolts and is rigid to the frame as is the motor mounts. Simple and light weight. Don't know if that meets the requirements you are putting on the hardware. This one shows the tabs and the mount.

No worries Russ you'll work it out! Some will laugh at my old school approach, but my plain old Mallory Dual Point with the lightweight spring point set works flawlessly. It didn't miss a beat on the Dyno pulls to well over 7K rpm and is inexpensive. I know Andy's red car has gone thousands of miles with one without skipping a beat. Plus if you want you can bypass the ballast resistor at the track for a really big spark, you...
