Thread: Kirkmans The Walking Dead : Is It Really That Good?

Started 4 months ago by PIP
now before i get shot down, let me start by saying i have TWD HC's 1 - 4, they are all signed and have little zombie sketched into them by Charlie Adlard, i have even had him do bigger sketches for me...... (my kids) but i can't help but wonder if people are going overboard about it, many people on this site have said that this is the best comic ever, or a least the best ...

As with wktf, I agree it is a really good book, but not the best book ever. The slowness of the bookdoesn't bother me as you mentioned, sometimes life is slow. With the book, you really never know who will live or die, anyone can go. And in this book, dead really is dead so a death really means something.

Well if you are banned for Heresy Pip, then I'm about to be burnt at the stake... Truth is, I've never found The Walking Dead that great of a book. I don't have a problem with the pace, but I've always found it to be a little clunky, and quite predictable, almost as if it's gradually ticking off boxes from The Great Big List of Zombie Cliches (tm.), and I also often find the dialogue and ...

I wouldn't say it's the best ever, but I can't fault the fans for liking it. A few months ago, I read the WD Compendium , which collects the first 48 issues. I loved the first 30 or so: very gripping, great pacing, and I actually feel that the slow parts are the best parts. Kirkman does a great job of building suspense, so when something finally does happen, it makes more of an impact. You...

I've purchased every issue since #1. It's a good book but not the end all, be all like many cheer. Sometimes, I feel it sort of just meanders and plods it's way through 5 issues. I also feel the Kirkman likes to shock for shocks' sake and because he can (the violence depected against children at times, rubs me the wrong way). I like the empty world scenario very much but, like a lotta high-...

Not at all, Pip. But do check this week's Mighty Reviews as I have two Walking Dead trade reviews in there. Would be interested in your take on these stories. I'll admit that I'm a fan, but won't fall on my sword about this being the best comic out there. I don't think it is, but it's up there as one of the really good ones.

I love it! That being said I don't think of it as the best comic ever, but it's different than 99% of what is out on the stands right now and I'm rarely disappointed with it. I might feel differently if I was reading the individual issues, but I've yet to be let down by reading the trades. Whenever I get a new trade it does tend to wind up at or near the top of the stack.

Both my girlfriend and I recently caught up to the single issues with TWD and I found it very predictable at times. I think the writing is what sustains it for us. The way each character does/says something. These are all people I could see doing exactly what you see in this book. I had a HUGE issue with the thunderdome...wait woodbury. Sorry I get the two mixed up since that cliche happens ...

Can't say it the greatest book of all time, but I have it up there as one of the best out right now. I've found it to be a consistently good read for the last few years. Not too many titles being produced right now I can say that about.

I really enjoy this book and it is definately up there with one of the few I still make sure I need to buy. I do however disagree that this book should not end. I feel that Kirkman continuing this book for too long could end up like a tv show that is past its prime. I am not saying end it now but at least I think there should be an end in the future like Y The last Man had __________________

Look at the latest issue though, with conversation between Carl and his dad, the dialogue for Carl was not that of a child, it was just the same old dialogue every character spouts. Its too wordy at times, and there are several issues where nothing happens. I am a fan, I'm just putting my critical hat on for a second.

I just bought the first two Hardcovers on the recommendations from a few friends that are raving over it. I will let you guys know what I think when I delve into it! And reading these posts has only fueled the fire of wanting to read them even more now! We shall see! It will be some time though I am in the middle of a series of trades and have about 6 to go before I get to walking dead. Not enough time in the world to read everything. Must...

The Walking Dead is the best comic published today. The level and consistency of quality that the comic has maintained since the first issue is amazing, if not unprecedented.
