Thread: Keyboard for Compaq Portable I

I just picked up a Compaq Portable that appears to have a dead keyboard. I can just switch the keycaps and such so, I don't care how ugly it is. Prefer no broken keys but, I can deal with it if that is all there is. Let me know.

I have the same situation. What I found works is using a double layer of double sided foam tape and Mylar (from balloon) to repair keys. I use a gasket hole punch to cut them out.

I think I would still flip the kb over and disassemble it. Check to see if the foam rubber under each key turned to goo.

If it is the keyboard foams I have some for sale on The Marketplace . Hopefully it's something simple like that and not an electronics issue. . .

Ugh that was a few screws. Everything is beautiful inside and the pads and contacts almost look new. Anyone know the pinout to the keyboard cable ? Is it possible to wire a AT keyboard to it ?

The whole pad is a sandwich of plastic, sponge and mylar. I've seen folks make replacements out of overhead transparencies, packing foam and mylar anti-static bags.
