Thread: Kelly recently said his first cut was approximately 3 hours long

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by primemover
Any chance we'll get that longer cut on DVD? BTW: I thought the film was terrific. Gotta love the fools on here saying it's a box office bomb. So what? It only cost $25 million to produce. I'm quite sure no one at Warner Brothers thought this was going to be a huge hit. It's way too "odd" to do big box office. Do Cronenberg or Lynch film make lots of money? Quit yapping about box office....

Kelly says if there's a Director's Cut he'd only put in a few more scenes. --------- "Doggerel" is my new favorite word.

First cuts are almost always around 3 hours. It's called an assembly cut. Most of the "extra" footage is actually just a beat or two of silence at the beginning and ending of every shot. Also, Cronenberg has had many films that were financially successful. Scanners started a franchise. The Fly crossed over to the mainstream. A History of Violence made 4x its budget. Most of his early horror ...

<<Of course, your comparison is idiotic>> Easy tiger or you're likely to hurt yourself. If you were reading carefully you would have realised I was talking about the pointlessness of determining a film's quality based on financial success. Not once did I say Kelly's talent was comparable to Lynch or Cronenberg's. I'm also well aware of the fact that their (Cronenberg and Lynch) films cost ...

Primemover I completely agree. I'll be the first one to say that I do think Kelly is comparable to Cronenberg and Lynch. Lynch I love Cronenberg I'm not so fond of but the thing is all three directors illicit a reaction from their audience and thats the most important thing. You either seem to love or hate them. You don't see people posting endlessly about films that are mediocre. Every time I ...

After the dissapointing Donnie Darko Director's Cut I think Kelly is best when he's edited down for theatrical release. Unlike most directors, his extended cuts are actually worse than the originals. Who Watches the Persians?

why can't people discuss the profitability of films? It's just as valid a discussion. This film will not be a huge bomb, but it will lose money theatrically for sure. I don't think Kelly will be making too many more films with a $25 million budget.

How is five or six separate threads screaming "It's a BOMB!", "discussion"? Comes across as trolling in my opinion. Anyway I'm sure NONE of the executives at Warner Brothers who saw a final cut of this film expected it to do big box office. It's not mainstream material.

I think the only people calling this a "bomb" are ignorant of its budget, relative lack of promotion, and the success of the DVD market. Once talking about another movie I had someone try to tell me movies rarely if ever make their money back on DVD. Personally I'm kind of happy with the cut as it is right now. My biggest problem with the film (the clear narrative delineation between ...

so, production cost of $25 million + say $5 million advertising + couple million for prints/distribution. The movie will make $20 million or less at the box office. On average, say they get 50% of the total gross. So, $10 million proceeds against $32 million cost. Also, I don't think this will do that well on DVD - horror does well typically, but the premise and marketing of this film was so muddled, I don't think it'll make...

How can this be a 3-hour movie? The plot is taken from the Twilight Zone episode "Button Button" with the excellent Brad Davis and Mare Winningham. All told in 20 minutes. www.imdb.com/title/tt0734727/
