It's legal in a lot of places.  KS used to have horrible gun laws.  Some of that is changing.

Full-auto weapons have always been legal in New Hampshire.

I think many, if not most, stores won't carry Class III stuff because of the extra government harassment.  I did see an M-16 for sale at the last gun show I went to.  ($17K or so... if I recall).
