Started 1 year, 4 months ago by Biggles48
I'm replacing my thermostat at the mo, what a p*g of a job!! and whildt stripping of the air filter and throttle body I found quite heavy deposits of an oily sludge both sides of the butterfly and down into the air filter housing. Can anybody tell me if it's a case of TADTS or if I have a problem. Sorry if it is TADTS and there are plenty of posts on this but I'm a novice here and hoping for ...

got same engine, you need like myself to fit a catch tank to stop oil from going into manifold think they are around ?70 or so on web.

As above - it is a common problem. You can make an official, works spec. catch tank from a jam jar.

I fitted a catch tank. This is the best way to stop it. I noticed oily sludge when fitting an Induction Kit, thats why i fitted mine. Think a lot of people on here have fitted one. Mine was ?40 off Fleabay. Its an easy DIY job. Do a search on it and you'll find pics.

But make sure you put it in the correct pipe, for some reason, many people do not (including some of the ones who have put photos up in this forum). It should go in the breather pipe that enters the throttle body nearest to the air cleaner. The other (smaller) pipe is just a supplementary pipe for when the engine is at idle.

Mg/Rover addressed this problem later on by recommending fully synthetic oil in the KV6. The last ZT180/190 models were fitted with Mobil 1. Change your oil anually with a top quality synthetic oil. Your inlet chamber and butterflies should never gunk up. A little oil in the inlet is common in all petrol engine cars, and indeed will keep the vis valves and all the butterfly mechanism ...

I have had my kv6 190 for a couple of months now and used fully synth 5/40 in mine as this was the spec I looked up. I have been wondering what all this oil catch tank stuff was about. My next addition will be an induction kit, any advice on which to fit? Pipercross or KN 570i? Thanks

Agh.. So it's not just me then.. with this oil in the throttle body. Mines a 2.5 KV6 in a 99 Sterling... Can anyone tell me why this stuff is vented into the intake system in the first place? Is it just me, or is this madness? Mmm.. This wouldn't be one of those environmental issues would it?

Half the price of the K&N with the same desired effect. Mine sounds awsome. You won't...
