Looks like we'll save a few bucks on Jones this year as Mike Fontenot edged him out of the final super two arbitration spot. < http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=ApwjMs2fQKcG 3glfP33coR8RvLYF?slug=ap-arbitration&prov=ap&type= lgns > One interesting thing about this is that it's possible that this could cause the Cubs to move Fontenot this winter instead of paying the extra mil or so. He's a...
NO. Penny pinching should be behind us now. With most of you saying that we need a stop gap until Bell arrives, which should be within the next two years if he doesn't crash and burn. Stop gap players are out there with a helluva lot more pop than that.
So you think we should sign a 3rd baseman to a multi year contract? If so, don't ya think that if Bell does pan (which I think he will) out we will have blocked him at the position he plays best.
I really like Fontenot and would welcome him at third base until Bell arrives. It won't happen, DT is on record saying he wants a home run hitter at third base (which to me means he's unwilling to give Turner any kind of time there - we'll see if that prediction comes true). That said, I'm not sure Fontenot gives us much of an upgrade over what Turner could (in the long term, Fontenot ...
Didn't say that. I think a viable option would be 1 year with club option or at the most a 2 year deal w/club option. Always gotta have that club option for a just in case moment. (worse case scenario)
On this case it's not a matter of screwing. DT, MacPitcher and the 7 ladies from 3rd and Eutaw have all said we need power from that position and from what you are proposing, it simply isn't there.
"Didn't say that. I think a viable option would be 1 year with club option or at the most a 2 year deal w/club option. Always gotta have that club option for a just in case moment. (worse case scenario)" Ok, I misunderstood you is all. So your not against the stop gap type, you just want one with a bit of power is all. Me too I guess, but I've always loved Fontenots ability to get on base, ...
Yeah, I thought about Turner but I think Fontenot has the better ability to get on base and also should be a better defender is why I would give him the edge.
OBP is more important than "power" one hundred out of one hundred times. SLG% is important, OBP is more important. Anyone who would take power at the cost of OBP doesn't get it. The key is to find someone who can get on base AND hit with pop, and hopefully Bell ultimately is that guy. Adding a 30-hr guy who can't get on base would be counterproductive... just the way it is.
"With most of you saying that we need a stop gap until Bell arrives, which should be within the next two years if he doesn't crash and burn" We'll see how it goes, but I'd say there is a reasonable chance we'll see Bell by midseason. Kid is a disciplined hitter.
"Didn't we have already Fontenot in our system and use him as trade bait for Sammy So$a???" Yeah, at the time I think Jerry Hairston (Thank God they didn't want B-Rob instead) was the main target of the Cubs. Fontenot was a young prospect at the time that we shouldn't have let go. Crouthers was a throw in. Sorry, I just assumed everyone knew that Fontenot was originally one of ours.

I'd have to agree with DT here, the Orioles really do need a 3B with a little more pop. This would be different if the O's had two 30 HR outfielders or a Prince Fielder/Adrian Gonzalez type masher at first or something, but that's not the case. Fontenot is a solid MLB player and really wouldn't be a bad option as a utility guy for a contending team, but the O's need someone with at least 20 HR potential at the hot...
