Money's tight everywhere - first macy's lowers it discount and now this - what next - charging for the Staten Island Ferry - I remember it used to be 5 cents.....

How do they enforce this with Tourists though?

Shinnygirl - VERY good question! How's everything in Wicklow - been there a couple of times - do you know of Benny, the vision impaired fellow who sells cell phones???? Poppa

"How do they enforce this with Tourists though?" I imagine the police give them a ticket like they would give anyone who lives here. Why would the situation be any different for tourists?

Poppa replied 1 month, 1 week ago
here's a scenario - say you are a tourist from the UK and receive a ticket for j-walking in NYC - usually you have to send your money to a centralized bureau/office/collection point - what are the chances that a foreigner will actually send in their fine? I received a ticket for overtime parking a rental car in Munich, Germany in 1969 - never paid the ticket. Just saying...

Re: what UrbanNYC said... <soapbox> lowering taxes = increasing fees, permits fines and "sin taxes." Over the past (gues how many) years, NYC has seen dramatic increases in the volume and prices of pedestrian tickets, parking tickets, licensing fees, event permits, construction fees, etc, etc. Someone's gotta pay in the end. It all depends on which ...

Wont the foreigner have probs next time getting into the country?

AlicePalace replied 1 month, 1 week ago
I'd love to see the ticket blitz hit everyone who ignores the signs about only riding bikes in vehicular lanes in Central Park. I'm sick to death of people riding their bikes on the walking paths.

evening replied 1 month, 1 week ago
and, lets ticket any bicycle rider who rides on the sidewalk or ignores traffic rules like riding against the light into a pack of pedestrians who arent jwalking we should also ticket all those refrigerated trucks that sit rumbling for hours in residential neighborhoods every morning. NYC could make millions on this alone...

Some people would think that you shlould not drink coffee on the subway because they have no restrooms! Let me dispel your ignorance of the laws - it is unlawful to eat or drink on the subway - so wait until you are on the platform to swig that joe!!. Poppa

"Alice - I was there by the Mitchel houses watching the Marathon 2 weeks ago. They started throwing potatoes out of the projects at the cops down below. I went to a cafe and struck up a conversation with the waitress - she told me that a lot of drug addicts still try to use their bathroom as it gets cleaned several times a day, unlike the McD's since it's disgusting. I know the South Bronx. And East New York." Hope...

Poppa" Lol Poppa, no I've never heard of him. What part of Wicklow where you in? My point was exactly how would they enforce it as once people leave the country they aren't going to care about a ticket. And I had assumed it wasn't linked...

a few months after leaving our rental flat in London in 1980 the roomate whose name the electric bill was it, got a 500 pound bill! Turned out it was for the whole 5 story building, not just our flat (we wont get into the mystery of why WE, the poor American students living 5 to a 2 BR flat, were suddenly being billed for the entire building as soon as we moved out!). We were told we would be persona non grata in England and would be refused...

New fines for letting your car idle. What gets me is that it used to be $5! nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/nyc_raises… The fine was $5 and the council voted Wednesday to raise it to $250. The bill also gets rid of a three-minute grace period.

Vladchan -- Do you really think that Customs and the embassies that issue visas are going to be told to be on the alert for folks with outstanding jaywalking tickets? I would hope they have better things to do.....
