I've been driving a car this week that has XM Radio. There's a station called 'Jam On' that features bands like Phish, The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Umphrey's McGee and the like, many of whom I have never heard of. I really like the music. It's complex yet moving, interesting yet melodic, polyrhythmic yet grooving, and I'm curious. I wonder if there is common thread to how these bands ...

They get started by people who want to get away from the same old crap you
hear day in and day out, and want to make music that inspires the people
making it. I used to be way into Metal until I saw Phish many moons ago,
and ever since then I have developed a taste for musicians who really know
their instruments, and each other, and aren't afraid to take some chances
musically. Weed does help too...
