Thread: Issue with my 5g and ALAC

Started 3 months, 3 weeks ago by Judd Sandage
I recently came across the Mono remaster of the Beatles in FLAC and I used a program called Easy CD-DA Extracter to convert it all to ALAC, and it works fine on my 3th and 5th gen nano and in iTunes itself but on my iPod it just skips every few seconds, so I ripped a CD using iTunes and CD-DA using ALAC, and the CD-DA skips but iTunes doesnt, any ideas? also on a side note, this is more ...

Is CD-DA using some open-source ALAC encoder or something? That would explain the issues. The only solid non-Apple ALAC encoder that I know of is the one included with dBpowerAMP. CD-DA is the culprit with your stuttering problem though. I suggest you look at dBpowerAMP if you want a secure and accurate 3rd party application that can effectively rip to ALAC (that won't cause issues with ...

I wish Apple would just release their encoders. Never sure what they think they are accomplishing by preventing others from encoding to AAC & ALAC with the QuickTime encoder in other programs. It makes things needlessly complex. If you want QT based AAC or ALAC but don't rip with iTunes (and if you have a good reason to use ALAC, you're not ripping with iTunes), you're left at lots of needless ...

dBpowerAMP just updated their ALAC encoder. It wasn't initially fully lossless (there were some issues) but all of those have been solved by now. It is not quite as efficient as Apple's ALAC encoder but we are only talking about 1-2MB per song (on average when encoding metal tracks, I don't know about other genres). I do wish that things were easier for us Windows users. Mac OS X users can ...

well I am not sure where CD-DA gets there ALAC encoding from, but one thing that is intrating is that itunes shows files done with cdda are 1410 k/s where as files done in itunes are more vbr in the 700 to 900 range. maybe the old ipod just cant handle an alac of such a high bitrate?

Code Monkey replied 3 months, 2 weeks ago
If you're getting a 1410 kpbs from CD-DA, it's just a wave or aiff inside the ALAC container, and that seems to be the most likely cause of the iPod belching at the files.

Judd Sandage replied 3 months, 2 weeks ago
AH! Well then, 320kbp/s VBR in mono then

Mono? Are you recording content from the 1960's or something. Always encode with joint-stereo when using mp3 (even if your source files are mono). The Lame mp3 encoder and iTunes mp3 encoder have been optimized for joint-stereo encoding. Having mono source files means that you will just get smaller file sizes. Also look into VBR encoding as 320kbps is overkill. No need to go that high when ...

I imported both of the Beatles remasters box sets into iTunes using ALAC. The stereo tracks averaged 875Kbps, and the monos were 550Kbps.

I understand Completely about not being able to hear artifacts above 192/k and I don't encode CBR 320, I use VBR 320 and most things end up in the low 200s, and in my car I have spent a fair amount of money but unfortunately I have a non working A/C and a moon roof that makes a lot of wind noise at speed, so granted I couldn't hear the artifacts above 96, but I don't care once I get a newer car with a silent interior I will move...
