Our department (about 25 people) is having a Thanksgiving potluck/meeting on Thursday. We decided last week that the leadership team (7 of us) would provide the main dishes and everyone else would bring sides & such. Yeah, unless a person is vegetarian or vegan, sweet potatoes or yams are not the first thing that comes to mind when you say main dish. That is not to say it cannot be a main ingredient in a main dish, say in a stew, in a casserole with pasta, or black bean and sweet potato burritos. I'm a little more sensitive to this, having a daughter who is vegetarian, and let me tell you, Thanksgiving last ...
I love yams and would welcome them at a potluck dinner; but as an almost vegetarian (eat a little seafood) with vegetarians and a vegan among my adult children - yams alone would not be considered a "main" dish. That is because it wouldn't really provide a primary source of protein.
