Thread: Is TCL cable for OTA channels getting better?

Started 1 year, 3 months ago by lchiu7
Maybe because I don't watch TCL cable TV for the OTA channels much (prefer to use DVB-S) I hadn't noticed this. But the other day I switched to TV1 on the (digital) cable and was surprised to see that the quality wasn't too bad. Switching between TCL cable and DVB-S only showed a marginal increase in quality (slightly sharper) and hardly noticeable. Noticed the same on TV2 and TV3. Of course ...

Source feed changed for TV1 and TV2. Analogue TV1 and 2 are also now letteredboxed rather than centre cut.

and being letterboxed on a onlder 4:3 tv makes the vertical height a bit smaller giving the illusion it looks better. But the quality have been better lately I think as well.

I am watching on a 58" TV (16:9 1080i). I do notice that the AR changes when you switch channels. You go to a channel and it's vertically stretched for a minute and then expands to fill the screen. Must be something in the signal to signal wide AR which my TV recognises?

Yes, the set top box will output the 16:9 signal (depending on what aspect ratio you have it set to) to change your TV from 4:3 to 16:9.
