No, the thing that made him a villain was that he was paranoid about anyone that came, convinced himself that they were trying to steal the bird, and killed them. Those people were telling the truth, they weren't 'interesting stories', they weren't bothered about the bird. Well, I'm willing to bet most of them weren't, at least.
