The only reason I ask is because I have this semi-feeling that the failure is in part due to the motherboard or the processor as I had the same motherboard and it crapped out my computer. Anyway, it just seems that my dad's computer, which is an "ancient" Athlon 64 3200+ always seems to get boggartly slow after time, and quite literally took 5 minutes to open solitaire, and 10 or 15 for ...

For sure sounds like a hard drive issue. Seagates and Hitachi drives tend to windle away right before they die.

A lot of the time that 'slow to start this' and 'slow to load that' that gets worse over time is because they never used any cleaners 'antivirus, spyware, adware, etc. and they don't defrag their harddrive and its getting filled up over time and the pc has to fight through too much crap for it to run as fast as it did.
